The San Francisco 49ers announced Tuesday that they have signed defensive lineman Gracen Halton to a four-year contract. In 2025, he appeared in 13 games with seven starts, recording 33 tackles, 7.0 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, two passes defended, and one forced fumble that he returned for a touchdown. That output earned him second-team All-SEC honors, placing him among the conference’s more impactful interior defenders as he transitioned from rotational minutes to larger roles.

Earlier in his Oklahoma career, he kept building his résumé as a presence in the defensive front. In 2024, he logged 30 tackles, 6.0 tackles for loss, 5.0 sacks, and two forced fumbles across 13 appearances, including three starts. He also played in 11 games in 2023. The pattern suggests a player who can contribute immediately when opportunities align, while still climbing as coaching staff and schemes settle.

The signing also provides the 49ers a clearer path to aligning offseason work with the realities of a regular-season defensive package. Having the full draft class under contract typically means rookies can participate in organized team activities and take install reps without late administrative uncertainty, a practical advantage for a team trying to refine communication and technique as camp and preseason approach.

For Halton personally, the move sets the stage for a challenge that is often more detailed than college evaluation games. Translating interior pass-rush moves, hand usage, and gap discipline to the NFL’s spacing and run-game hit points is usually where developmental timelines tighten.
