THE APEX TIMES
San Francisco’s June roster-building has been framed as a win after landing Mike Evans and Osa Odighizuwa, yet a recurring question is whether the team spent its leverage in the right places elsewhere on the roster.
The San Francisco 49ers can make a persuasive case that their offseason has improved the ceiling of their roster, even if it did not leave every area fully addressed. A prominent critique circulating through NFL coverage centers on what the 49ers did not accomplish, not what they did. In that framing, the addition of Mike Evans and Osa Odighizuwa is treated as the clear highlight of the team’s personnel work, while the “worst decision” argument is essentially that the front office still may have compromised somewhere else in order to get those wins.
Mike Evans, brought in as an impact receiving presence, matters to the 49ers because it affects how defenses must manage the passing game in high-leverage situations. A team can design an offense to protect play-call intent, but it still needs reliable targets who can separate, secure catches, and influence coverage. By adding Evans, San Francisco gains another proven option that can turn long developing concepts into earlier, more consistent opportunities for quarterbacks.
Osa Odighizuwa’s addition shifts the other side of the ball in a different way. Defensive line play is often the most direct connector between schematic intent and game scripts, because it influences pressure without needing to blitz and it can control run lanes on early downs. Odighizuwa’s presence is the kind of move that gives the 49ers more ways to match personnel and keep their defensive rotations from becoming predictable late in games.
The reason this offseason remains an open debate, though, is that “successful” team-building is rarely measured by one or two additions. Even when a roster gets better, every move creates a tradeoff. Salary-cap management, draft capital allocation, and roster slotting all limit how many “must-fix” problems can be solved at once. That is the central theme of the coverage question: if the 49ers got Evans and Odighizuwa, what did they decide not to prioritize, or what decision left them less complete than they wanted to be.
For fans and evaluators, the question going forward is how those decisions show up in practice and in the regular season. Watch whether the offense can sustain drive efficiency when it needs to convert third downs, and watch whether the defense can generate a steadier flow of pressure and run-stop consistency without leaning on the same stunt or blitz package every week. If the Evans and Odighizuwa additions produce immediate spillover benefits, then the “worst decision” argument will likely soften.
If, however, the 49ers’ performance reveals a persistent weakness in another roster area that could have been targeted but was not, the criticism will gain strength. In the NFL, roster building is a chain reaction. A strong offseason in one unit can still leave vulnerabilities elsewhere, and those gaps tend to become obvious when opponents force specific matchups. The next steps for San Francisco are therefore less about what the team added this summer and more about how complete it looks when the season begins.
As of this writing, the underlying debate is grounded in the personnel-highlight premise that San Francisco added Mike Evans and Osa Odighizuwa, with the remainder of the “worst decision” discussion reflecting coverage analysis rather than an official, point-by-point accounting of all roster moves. Any final judgment will depend on the full transaction ledger and how the team performs once games start, not just on one side of the roster improvement story.
