Morey’s departure set off a rapid reorganization at the top. An report said Morey was dismissed after the 76ers were eliminated in the Eastern Conference semifinals, with the team keeping coach Nick Nurse. The same report noted Morey had led Philadelphia to a 270-212 regular-season record during his tenure. It also said Bob Myers would oversee the basketball operations department in the interim while the team searched for a replacement.

Since that search, Philadelphia has identified Mike Gansey as the new lead basketball operations figure, per reporting. CBS Philadelphia reported that Nelson is being promoted to executive vice president of basketball operations under Gansey, positioning him as the No. 2 executive in the front office hierarchy. That aligns with additional coverage citing ESPN reporting that Nelson is taking on significantly expanded authority as Philadelphia’s basketball personnel leadership is rebuilt.

Nelson’s promotion is tied to his long run through the organization’s developmental ladder. CBS Philadelphia reported that the Philadelphia-area native was hired in 2020 as an assistant general manager and scout for the Delaware Blue Coats, the 76ers’ G League affiliate. He later became the Blue Coats’ general manager and then was promoted again in May 2025 to assistant general manager for the 76ers under Morey. In this new structure, Nelson’s role suggests the 76ers are leaning harder on their internal evaluators, development staff, and player personnel process.

Brand’s exit from the general manager job marks a sharp turn for an executive who has been embedded in the team’s identity for years. Multiple reports said Brand will not return as Philadelphia’s GM and is working through a new role within the organization and its ownership group. Brand has served as the 76ers’ general manager since September 2018, and his removal indicates that the club wants a different decision-making structure after a season that ended without the breakthrough Philadelphia expected.

There is one wrinkle worth monitoring: the 76ers’ official staff directory still lists Elton Brand as general manager and Jameer Nelson as assistant general manager. That doesn’t necessarily mean Brand is staying in the job, but it does suggest the public-facing roster of titles may lag behind internal changes.
