With a decade-long stretch of superstar-caliber production defining the American League’s Most Valuable Player conversations, a new ballot narrative is forming around the simple math of games played.
A new MVP ballot narrative is taking shape in the American League, and the shift is less about who is suddenly better than it is about what voters will tolerate when a candidate’s season availability is limited. In a wide-ranging discussion published by Yahoo Sports on June 18, the emphasis landed on the question of whether the bar for a fourth MVP for Aaron Judge can be cleared if he ends up playing closer to a roughly 100-game range rather than a full season.
The premise matters because Judge has been one of the sport’s defining figures during the era in which the MVP award often functioned like a referendum on dominance. Yahoo’s framing points to “half a decade of dominance” and, even while stopping short of declaring a fourth award impossible, suggests that missing a meaningful slice of the schedule will make a repeat of recent voting outcomes difficult.
In that same context, the article argues that Judge’s most optimistic scenario would likely land him around 100 games, using “IL-reduced projections” as the basis for the estimate. It then pairs that with a voting-style conclusion, stating that even a player of Judge’s caliber would not necessarily be enough to earn an additional MVP while absent for that many contests.
The timing of this ballot conversation is also important. MVP voting in MLB always involves more than peak value, it is also a reflection of narrative coherence, team context, and the perceived fairness of evaluating players who miss time. When a player’s candidacy is threatened by availability, the award picture typically expands, creating room for another star to become the cleanest option on a ballot.
Yahoo’s tone is cautious, using language that acknowledges Judge’s standing while also highlighting the realities of a crowded voting landscape. That combination, praising his impact while underlining the obstacles, is what makes the “fresh winner” idea feel newly credible rather than theoretical.
Still, there is a caveat worth underscoring. The discussion is built around projections and a games-played expectation, not a finalized outcome. MVP ballots do not only react to missed time, they respond to how a player performs when he is on the field, how teams fare during the stretch, and whether other contenders separate themselves in a way that compels first-place consideration.
What to watch next, as the ballot becomes more fluid, is whether the American League’s leading candidates can convert their case into something that voters see as both elite and season-spanning. If Judge’s availability winds up aligning with the “around 100 games” expectation, the race will likely pivot further toward players who can credibly claim both sustained production and a fuller slate of starts.
If, on the other hand, Judge’s playing time ends up closer to a typical workhorse workload, the argument for a fourth MVP would regain strength, because the most common objection to repeating collapses when the season slate is comparable. Either way, the ballot storyline set out by Yahoo brings a clear theme into focus: in MVP voting, availability can be the difference between being the best player and being the winner.
