An offseason planning exercise frames New Orleans GM Trajan Langdon as a model for how to build flexibility, manage fit, and wait for the right market moment in a league shaped by star power.
NBA front offices can’t start every deal at the same speed. Many teams end up doing the quiet work first, then accelerate once the market shifts. In a new essay from Yahoo Sports, the central idea is that the league may be waiting for Giannis Antetokounmpo’s offseason situation to clarify, and that teams should map their own paths in the meantime. The piece does not present a confirmed plan for any specific club. Instead, it lays out what a “complete Trajan Langdon offseason” could look like, treating Langdon’s organizational approach as a template.
Langdon, the New Orleans Pelicans’ president of basketball operations, has built a reputation around roster construction that prioritizes spacing, multi-role defenders, and an ability to keep options open. The Yahoo Sports piece frames that philosophy as a reason other executives might want to borrow the same sequencing: identify what you need, prepare for multiple outcomes, then act when the market’s constraints loosen. It also makes clear that any “complete” plan is conditional, because the NBA’s trade and free-agent rhythm often turns on one or two high-report players and the leverage those players create.
The essay’s most important premise is timing. It suggests teams could feel stuck until the Giannis “shoe” drops, meaning until the league gains clarity on what teams can do, what they must do, and what they can safely wait on. In that environment, a proactive front office tries to avoid locking itself into one narrow outcome. That typically translates into holding roster spots, preserving salary flexibility, and using draft assets and tradeable players in ways that do not foreclose future trades.
From there, the hypothetical becomes more granular, even as it remains speculative. The Yahoo Sports writer emphasizes the need to think in terms of fit and roles rather than only headline names. That approach usually requires roster mapping around lineup questions, such as who can play next to the team’s primary creators, who can defend multiple positions, and how the offense functions without the ball in certain sets. The “Langdon offseason” framing is used to argue that smart planning means layering solutions, not betting everything on a single move.
There is also a recognition that execution matters, not just intentions. In modern NBA roster-building, the difference between an effective plan and an ineffective one often comes down to whether the team can actually deliver the desired roster after accounting for constraints like contract structure, salary-matching realities, and the availability of comparable players at the right price. The essay’s thought experiment implicitly treats those mechanics as constraints that an executive must plan around from day one, not as afterthoughts once the summer calendar starts to move.
For Pelicans fans, the takeaway is less about a specific rumor and more about a team-building style. For the rest of the league, the takeaway is that offseason work is not only the transactions themselves, but the preparation that makes transactions possible. As the summer progresses, watch for whether teams that appear patient actually have multiple contingency plans, and whether the market’s biggest leverage point changes the pace of negotiations across the board.
In other words, this is an analysis of how an offseason could be constructed, not proof that it is being constructed that way. The NBA’s star-driven domino effects can reorder priorities quickly. Until the league’s highest-report situations are clarified, the most realistic “complete offseason” is one designed to survive uncertainty, not one built on a single assumption.
