The Phillies announced that right latissimus dorsi repair surgery will keep outfielder Adolis García sidelined for the remainder of the 2026 campaign, with a projected return window aimed at the start of 2027.
Philadelphia’s regular-season outlook for the back half of 2026 took a hit with the team’s announcement that outfielder Adolis García will miss the rest of the season after being scheduled for right latissimus dorsi repair surgery. The procedure is set for next Wednesday and will be performed by Dr. Anthony Romeo, according to the Phillies’ team release.
The injury context traces to the June 10 game against the Toronto Blue Jays, when García exited in the seventh inning after a throw to home plate. The team framed the current step as a corrective procedure, with the recovery timeline driving the decision to rule him out for the rest of the year.
The Phillies’ announcement projected a six-to-eight month recovery for a full return to play. Based on that window, the team said García is expected to be ready for the start of the 2027 season, aligning the rehabilitation plan with the offseason-to-early-spring timeline rather than attempting a late-2026 comeback.
For the Phillies, García’s absence matters because it removes an everyday outfield bat and a consistent presence in the lineup for the final stretch of the regular season. While Philadelphia will continue to evaluate internal options, the timing of the injury also suggests roster planning will focus on durability for the remaining months, since García will not be available to supplement depth during the most important weeks.
The injury is also notable for the type of repair being discussed. A latissimus dorsi issue connects directly to upper-body strength and throwing mechanics, making the team’s decision to pursue surgery and plan for a longer recovery period a clear report that it will prioritize a full rebuild of function rather than short-term mitigation.
With García out through 2026, the Phillies’ next questions revolve around how they cover outfield innings, how they manage the daily mix of hitters, and whether any changes persist beyond the immediate void. For Toronto, the Blue Jays are already on record as the opponent in the specific game where García left after a throw to home plate, marking a rare moment when both teams were directly tied to the sequence that led to the surgery plan.
Looking ahead, the key development to watch is the surgery itself and the rehabilitation milestones that follow. The Phillies’ stated expectation is a 2027 opener return, so the most meaningful updates will come from the team’s medical progression rather than game-day availability for the remainder of this season.
