First-round picks are usually slated for immediate starting roles, but a CBS Sports look at the AFC highlights how non-first-round rookies with meaningful snap counts can become difference-makers.
The NFL’s attention cycle often treats Round 1 as destiny. Starters are assumed, roles are assumed, and the development path is expected to follow a simple script. A new CBS Sports feature argues that the most reliable surprises in the AFC in 2026 may come from rookies who were not first-round selections, but who still earned significant playing time and could carry their momentum into higher-leverage duties.
CBS points to a key baseline for that argument: TruMedia data showing there were 46 non-first-round rookies who played at least 300 snaps in the AFC last season. The point is less about draft pedigree and more about proof of capability. When a player has already handled a workload, the leap from “rookie” to “impact option” can happen quickly, especially as coordinators search for reliable playmakers in a compressed offseason-to-roster timeline.
Among the examples CBS lists are Defensive Rookie of the Year Carson Schwesinger and Cleveland Browns tight end Harold Fannin Jr. Both are cited in the context of already having established a role through meaningful production as rookies, even if they were not framed as automatic long-term starters at the time of the draft.
For fans, the practical meaning of “beyond Round 1” is roster competition that looks different than the early-first-round narrative. First-round picks are penciled in as starters in most cases, CBS notes, but the remaining 32 names in a typical class are where battles can be real and changing. In that second tier, snap counts, situational packages, and special teams assignments can turn into starting opportunities when a team’s depth chart is thinner than it appears on paper.
The Browns’ inclusion of Harold Fannin Jr. underscores one common AFC theme for 2026: the tight end and skill-position role can be a multiplier when a rookie arrives ready to contribute. Tight ends who can play on third downs, protect effectively, and win matchups can earn routes that other players never see, particularly if a quarterback is looking for a trusted option after the cadence, protection calls, and coverage rotations settle in.
On the defensive side, the mention of Carson Schwesinger highlights how performance at the rookie level can accelerate the path to higher-leverage assignments. Rookie defenders who earn trust in critical moments often become the kind of player coaches build around, whether that means more snaps, expanded responsibilities in run fits, or broader usage across packages.
CBS frames its larger list as a set of “sleepers” rather than a prediction market, but the logic is consistent. In the AFC, where roster turnover and offensive innovation are constant, non-first-round rookies who already logged heavy minutes represent a more concrete foundation for impact than prospects whose value is still theoretical.
For what to watch next, the question is not whether these players were good, but whether teams can translate early playing time into a sustained role. The clearest indicators will be how quickly they earn responsibility in base formations, how often they appear in pass-heavy sequences, and whether their usage grows as offseason competition runs into training camp and the regular-season routine. Even without being drafted in the top tier, the AFC’s depth chart can make late-class movers matter.
