With less than a week until the Washington Wizards make their selection, a new AI-generated USA TODAY Sports NBA mock draft highlights how settled the top three feels, while the rest of the first round remains up for debate.
A newly published AI-generated NBA mock draft from USA TODAY Sports is taking aim at the first round, and it offers a clear starting point while underscoring that the order after the very top is still fluid. According to the draft preview, the model is most steadfast about the top three selections, but it stops short of creating full agreement for the remainder of the first round.
The early consensus embedded in the discussion begins with BYU forward AJ Dybantsa as a leading candidate for the top spot. In the same preview, the analytics component reportedly leaned toward Duke center Cameron Boozer, reflecting the ongoing tension between projected value, role fit, and ceiling arguments that tend to drive top-pick debates.
The draft preview also keeps Kansas guard Darryn Peterson in the mix, framing him as an alternate path depending on how teams prioritize creation, spacing, and backcourt evolution for their long-term plans. The preview describes the situation as a genuine debate between Dybantsa and Boozer, with Peterson also receiving attention, rather than a single, universally agreed ladder for the very first picks.
Beyond the top-three discussion, the preview stresses the lack of a true consensus across the rest of the first round. That matters because mock drafts often become a proxy for how organizations are trending on player archetypes and positional needs, even when real draft boards remain private. The preview implies the model’s choices diverge from the broader market view, at least after the top portion of the draft.
For the Washington Wizards, the framing is especially relevant because they are on the clock with the No. 1 selection. The preview notes that the Wizards are the team making the first official pick at the draft, and that timing naturally concentrates attention on which prospect profile best fits the organization’s next roster chapter.
It is important to treat an AI mock draft as an informational exercise rather than a prediction with the weight of a team’s internal evaluation. While the preview suggests the model is confident at the top, actual draft outcomes still depend on workouts, medicals, interviews, positional preferences, and whether teams value a specific player package over another.
What to watch next is whether the top-three debate consolidates closer to draft night or stays genuinely split. If the consensus narrative begins to narrow around one prospect, it will likely be because multiple independent reporting streams converge. If not, the Wizards, and the rest of the league, could be operating with multiple viable plans depending on who is available.
In the meantime, the story lines around Dybantsa, Boozer, and Peterson offer a snapshot of what front offices tend to argue when the draft gets close: whether to bet on NBA translation early (and how), whether positional certainty matters more than a broader skill profile, and how much teams are willing to bank on fit versus pure upside.
