Google says new research and pilot feedback show its step-by-step Guided Learning feature can lift students’ learning gains and give teachers more control over how AI assistance is used in class.
Google is rolling out an education feature inside Google Classroom that is designed to keep students from racing to answers and instead walk them through difficult material. The company’s new “Guided Learning” tools, Google said in a product update, coach learners step by step using practice and customized learning aids, with the goal of improving understanding during independent study.
In the rollout, teachers can assign guided lessons through Google Classroom and then track student progress. Google framed the approach as different from simply offering direct answers. Guided Learning is intended to prioritize deep understanding, including through practice quizzes and custom visual aids, while keeping teachers in control of how and when the feature is used.
Google also pointed to new evidence from two studies meant to test how Guided Learning performs in real learning settings. The first, described as a randomized controlled trial (RCT) at the University of Tokyo with more than 300 students, compared outcomes from standard online study resources against those same resources plus access to Guided Learning in the Gemini app.
In the study, students were given half a day to study a statistics lesson independently. Students in both groups used standard web tools, while roughly half also had access to Guided Learning. Google said the results showed a measurable difference in learning gains after the study session, with students using only standard tools improving test scores by 5.3 percentage points, compared with 8.1 percentage points for students who also used Guided Learning.
Google said the gap equated to 1.5 times higher learning gains, based on pre- and post-test scores. The company emphasized that the improvement came within a single study session, describing the timeframe as a key part of the evidence because the gains were generated during a relatively short period rather than after extended instruction.
To test Guided Learning in a broader classroom environment, Google partnered with Ark and ran a four-week pilot across three UK secondary schools. The company said teachers used Guided Learning in Google Classroom across four different subjects during the trial, and it collected feedback through post-pilot surveys and interviews.
According to Google, teachers reported that Guided Learning handled initial student questions effectively during independent work, which they said freed up time for more targeted one-on-one help. Google added that most surveyed students said they felt comfortable asking Gemini for help when stuck, and over half reported that it helped them solve problems independently.
Google also described updates made in response to educator feedback from the pilot. Some teachers wanted clearer visibility into how students were engaging with course materials, and others asked for ways to keep students focused on specific assignments during class time and reduce distractions. Google said it responded by adding insights for educators to show how students interacted with Guided Learning and improving the ability for teachers to anchor conversations on uploaded curriculum.
The company said the teacher-led Guided Learning experience is now beginning to roll out globally in Google Classroom. Google positioned the feature as part of a broader effort to incorporate learning science, work alongside educators, and use research conducted in classroom settings to shape AI-driven learning tools.
What remains less clear is the scope and timing of the global rollout beyond Google’s statements that the feature is starting to roll out, along with details such as when specific jurisdictions will get access and what exact privacy or instructional controls are available to districts at launch. Google also did not provide the full methodology for either study beyond the RCT setup and the pilot duration, so the durability of the learning gains over longer periods is still an open question.
