Amazon Deal With Corning Sparks Jump in Corning Shares, Adds 1,000 Jobs in North Carolina

Amazon says it has signed a multiyear, multibillion-dollar agreement with Corning to supply optical fiber and connectivity solutions for data centers, expanding manufacturing and training programs in the state.

Amazon announced a multiyear, multibillion-dollar agreement with Corning Incorporated to supply optical fiber and related connectivity solutions used in data centers, a move that is already driving expectations around U.S. manufacturing capacity. Corning shares rose about 7% in early trading after the news, according to Reuters. The companies did not disclose the partnership’s financial terms in the announcement made public Monday.

Under the agreement, Amazon will work with Corning to expand the specialty glassmaker’s manufacturing facilities across North Carolina. Amazon said the investment will create 1,000 new, highly skilled manufacturing jobs at Corning sites in the state and support hundreds of additional construction jobs tied to facility expansion. Amazon described the optics relationship as part of its expanding data center footprint across the United States.

Optical fiber is the cable technology that transmits data as light, forming a key part of how data centers move information between servers and storage. Amazon said Corning’s glass and fiber optic technology is critical to that infrastructure, and positioned the deal as strengthening the domestic supply chain. The company also linked the expansion to broader efforts around “fiber densification,” which refers to expanding the reach and capacity of fiber networks for residential and commercial service.

Amazon will also partner with Corning to expand a Fiber Optic Technician Training Program with Catawba Valley Community College in North Carolina. Amazon said the upgraded program will provide hands-on education and coursework aimed at building a talent pipeline for fiber optic manufacturing and related technical roles. In remarks included with the announcement, Amazon Web Services CEO Matt Garman said Amazon is working to train North Carolinians for roles in fiber optics and fusion splicing, a process used to connect fiber cables.

Corning’s leadership also framed the agreement as a milestone for U.S. manufacturing. Corning CEO Wendell Weeks said the investment would help the company expand production and create 1,000 new advanced manufacturing jobs at its North Carolina facilities while supporting a more resilient domestic manufacturing base. Amazon’s release emphasized that the deal builds on other Amazon investments in North Carolina, including a stated plan to invest $10 billion in the state last year to expand cloud infrastructure and a claim that the company has invested more than $20 billion since 2010.

Beyond the jobs angle, the partnership points to a broader competition for “last mile” capacity in AI and cloud infrastructure: not just compute and data center real estate, but the physical components that connect and scale those systems. For Corning, the fiber optic business has been a bright spot in recent years even as some of its consumer-oriented glass products faced pressure from softer demand for electronics, Reuters noted. For Amazon, securing supply for optical fiber and connectivity is a way to reduce operational risk as it continues to build and modernize data centers.

Still, several details remain unclear. Amazon and Corning did not provide additional financial terms, including the value of the partnership, specific production volumes, or the timeline for when new capacity will be fully ramped. The announcement also did not specify which Corning sites are expected to see the largest expansions within North Carolina, beyond describing a broad footprint near Amazon data centers.

What to watch next is how quickly Corning translates the agreement into expanded manufacturing output and whether additional state or local workforce and construction updates follow. Investors may also look for follow-on disclosures in Corning’s filings and earnings materials, especially around capex plans, hiring progression for the 1,000-job target, and how the company’s fiber optic product mix is affected as Amazon’s data center buildout continues.

Why It Matters

  • Optical fiber and connectivity components are increasingly viewed as bottlenecks for scaling data center and AI infrastructure, raising the strategic value of long-term supplier agreements.
  • The manufacturing and training commitments highlight how large cloud providers are trying to address domestic workforce needs, not only buy equipment.
  • For Corning, the agreement provides a demand announcement for its fast-growing fiber optics unit as U.S. data center buildout continues.
  • For Amazon, the deal is another step toward ensuring supply-chain resilience as its data center footprint grows across the country.
