Amazon details global push to cut water use and recycle supply for communities and infrastructure
In a new sustainability update, Amazon points to projects that channel treated water into rivers, aquifers and local irrigation, alongside data-center programs designed to monitor leaks and reduce cooling demand.
Amazon is laying out a broad set of water conservation and replenishment efforts across its retail, logistics, and cloud businesses, describing new and ongoing steps to reduce its water footprint and support communities facing water stress. The update, published by the company, highlights treated-water reuse projects, expanded recycling at facilities, and watershed restoration initiatives meant to replenish supplies over the long term.
One of Amazon’s examples is in Chennai, India, where it says it is channeling treated water into depleted aquifers as part of an effort to improve the region’s long-term water security. Beyond sanitation and river flows, Amazon says it is trying to sustain local green spaces by using reclaimed water for irrigation. In the update, Amazon references irrigation tied to a Miyawaki forest, a dense, fast-growing woodland created using a Japanese reforestation technique, and irrigation for public parks near those sites. Amazon also says community organizations will be able to collect treated water using tanker trucks for uses including toilet flushing and campus irrigation at local schools and colleges.
On the technology and operations side, Amazon’s update draws a line from cloud computing systems to water efficiency in data centers. It says AWS uses cloud-based technologies to monitor water use in real time, quickly identify leaks, and implement cooling solutions. The company claims that many facilities can use zero water for cooling during 95% of the year, while also using recycled water at 24 data centers worldwide, which it says preserves drinking water supplies.
Amazon also describes a global water metering and leak detection program. It cites a pilot in the United Kingdom that, over two years, saved an estimated 700 million liters of leaked water. For parts of its retail and fulfillment operations, Amazon points to expanded harvesting and reuse solutions at fulfillment centers, sort centers, and delivery stations, and it says water efficiency improvements are also being deployed in physical store environments.
In the grocery business, the update spotlights Whole Foods Market stores in the Denver area equipped with Boss Defrost systems, which are described as circulating pump systems that recycle meltwater instead of letting it run down the drain. Amazon says those stores saw average overall store water usage decrease by 12% between 2021 and 2022, presenting the change as a measurable operational improvement tied to water reuse equipment.

It adds that the building is expected to achieve 50% water savings below building code and recycle 7.5 million gallons each year, using the combination of collected water streams rather than relying entirely on fresh water supply.
Amazon frames replenishment as a separate but connected challenge from conservation. It says it has 27 water replenishment projects expected to return more than 8 billion liters of water annually once completed, with work intended to expand clean water and sanitation access, improve water quality, and increase water availability in water-stressed communities. The company also says some projects are already underway while others are just commencing.
The update includes examples of new projects announced earlier in Spain and India. Amazon says three projects in Spain’s Zaragoza province are expected to reduce flood risk for 700,000 residents, modernize critical infrastructure, and optimize agricultural water use using artificial intelligence. In India, Amazon says it has invested in five projects, partnering with and WaterAid to bring clean water and sanitation to more than 250,000 people surrounding its regions there.
Still, the company’s update does not provide independent verification, project-by-project financial disclosures, or details on how outcomes like water savings and “returns” will be measured over time. It also does not specify timelines for every site, nor does it break out water impacts by business unit at a uniform level of accounting.
