Amazon Leo’s LE-03 mission to use upgraded Ariane 6 solid boosters, aiming to deploy 36 satellites
A June 17 launch targets Amazon’s largest Ariane payload yet, with Ariane 64’s upgraded P160C boosters designed to add performance and increase the number of satellites released per flight.
Amazon’s low Earth orbit broadband satellite constellation, Amazon Leo, is set to expand again with its Leo Europe 03 mission, known as LE-03, a planned launch on June 17 from Europe’s Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana. Amazon said the mission will carry 36 Amazon Leo satellites, describing it as the heaviest payload ever launched by an Ariane rocket and the largest payload to date for both Amazon Leo and Arianespace.
Amazon’s announcement ties the jump in payload weight and satellite count to upgraded solid rocket boosters on Ariane 6. For LE-03, Arianespace will use Ariane 6 in its Ariane 64 configuration, which refers to the rocket’s four solid boosters. The mission will rely on upgraded P160C boosters developed in Europe by ArianeGroup, which Amazon said increase rocket performance and allow four more satellites per launch than prior Ariane 6 Amazon Leo missions.
The boosters matter because they change what the launch vehicle can safely carry into low Earth orbit, the region roughly from 160 to 2,000 kilometers above Earth where Amazon Leo satellites operate. Amazon said the P160C boosters are an upgraded version of the earlier P120C design. In Amazon’s account, the P160C design adds additional solid propellant and extends the boosters’ operating time, creating extra performance margin to support the higher deployment capacity.
Arianespace, in its own briefing for the same flight, said LE-03 is designated VA269. It also said the launch will be the first time Ariane 64 uses the P160C advanced solid-propellant boosters, and that the 36-satellite payload would be the heaviest ever launched by an Ariane launcher. Arianespace also described the mission timeline and called attention to the new booster upgrade as Ariane 6’s first major launch-vehicle enhancement.
ArianeGroup and ESA-related materials describe the underlying upgrade in technical terms. ArianeGroup says the P160C upgrade is one meter longer than P120C and increases the propellant load, which it says raises payload performance to low Earth orbit by more than two tonnes. ESA similarly describes P160C as a significant upgrade that carries more propellant and is longer, enabling either heavier missions or missions to farther destinations.
In Amazon’s framing, the LE-03 mission also marks a scaling milestone for Europe’s role in its deployment. Amazon said that, if LE-03 succeeds, Europe will have launched more than 25% of Amazon’s growing constellation. The company also said it expects LE-03 to build on earlier Amazon Leo missions flown by Arianespace, including a period in which Arianespace has already launched 330+ Amazon Leo satellites into orbit.
Amazon executives positioned the booster change as an engineering collaboration aimed at accelerating constellation deployment. Melissa Wuerl, director of Launch Systems for Amazon Leo, said the payload capacity increase to 36 satellites per mission comes from work with Arianespace and that each additional safely deployed satellite per launch accelerates scaling. Amazon also quoted David Cavaillolès, CEO of Arianespace, tying the P160C performance gain to confidence in Ariane 6 and to teams across Europe contributing to the mission.
What Amazon did not spell out in its announcement are certain operational details that can still affect real-world timelines and eventual satellite commissioning. The company did not disclose whether the 36 satellites are all of the same configuration, how quickly each will reach full operational status after deployment, or any financial terms beyond noting a long-term relationship with Arianespace and a contract covering 18 launches on Ariane 6. As with any launch, the mission window and performance margin leave room for uncertainty tied to weather, range operations, or final flight dynamics.
