Apple brings new M6 and M5 Pro chips to an upgraded Mac mini, targeting faster on-device AI

Apple also emphasized that the new Mac mini machines are built for higher bandwidth memory and bigger local AI setups. For the M6 model, Apple said memory comes with 16GB as standard and can be configured up to 32GB, with memory bandwidth up to 170GB/s. For M5 Pro, Apple said it can support up to 64GB of unified memory with up to 307GB/s of memory bandwidth, enabling larger local AI models, complex 3D work, ProRes RAW editing, and the ability to load larger custom datasets for research.

The upgrade is paired with Apple’s upcoming macOS 27, which Apple called “Golden Gate.” Apple said the new operating system brings “Siri AI,” described as a more capable assistant that can draw on personal context to help users find information across messages, emails, and photos, answer questions broadly, and complete tasks across apps. Apple also said Siri AI is integrated into Spotlight and systemwide context menus, and that users can ask it about what is currently on their display using a Visual Intelligence feature via a dedicated keyboard shortcut.
Apple Intelligence features in macOS 27 are also positioned as a key reason to adopt the new hardware. Apple said browsing can be tailored and organized in Safari, automation can be created in Shortcuts by describing it in natural language, and advanced photo editing will be supported in the Photos app. The company also described refinements to Liquid Glass visual effects, including readability improvements and interface adjustments intended to make the system more responsive and personalized.
