Apple pushes iPhone Duo developer updates live this Friday, expanding apps across fold positions
Apple says apps optimized for its first foldable iPhone will roll out starting Friday, highlighted by seamless transitions between the outer and inner displays, new iOS tooling for folding layouts, and early feature work from Netflix, Microsoft and major productivity, media and games partners.
Apple is moving to turn its foldable iPhone Duo into a software platform as well as a new piece of hardware. In a company announcement published Tuesday, Apple said developers are preparing optimized app experiences for iPhone Duo that will be discoverable in the App Store starting this Friday, supported by Apple’s latest iOS development tools and in-device performance upgrades.
Apple’s guidance centers on how apps behave as users move between the device’s two displays. iPhone Duo’s inner display is described as 50 percent larger than iPhone 18 Pro Max, and Apple said the two displays share the same aspect ratio so apps can transition smoothly from the outer display to the inner display. The idea, according to Apple, is that users can pick up where they left off even as the phone unfolds and content scales proportionally across the larger canvas.
Apple linked the new software push to iPhone Duo’s performance and interaction features. The company said the device is powered by A20 Pro and includes new capabilities for iPhone, including Split View, allowing two apps to appear side by side for the first time on iPhone. Apple also pointed to on-device performance and new ways to arrange content when iPhone Duo is partially folded or held in different poses.
A set of major consumer and media services will be among the early beneficiaries. Netflix, Prime Video and Paramount+ are listed as joining Apple TV in using what Apple called the larger canvas for movies and series. Apple’s examples included Netflix’s Clips experience, where browsing occurs on the outer display and playback continues on the inner display, with Clips switching seamlessly between vertical and horizontal view. Apple also described Prime Video content behavior when the device is partially folded, including a layout where X-Ray details appear while video plays on the top half.
Sports and live information are also highlighted. Apple said MLB and PGA Tour will support live games and highlights with real-time scores, stats and leaderboards on the larger display. For MLB, Apple described a table-like posture where a live game fills the upright half while real-time stats fill the half resting on the table, aimed at letting fans view both broadcast and box score information at the same time.
Productivity and communications apps are positioned around Split View and side-by-side layouts. Apple said Microsoft Word and Outlook are rolling out a “desktop-class experience” that places Word formatting tools alongside a document and Outlook’s inbox next to a full message. Zoom was described as turning the inner display into an immersive video conference room, while Slack is described as bringing a user’s workspace into view so they can follow channels and automate tasks. Salesforce was cited for showing more dashboards at once.
Calendar, notes and task apps are another focal area. Apple named Fantastical for showing calendars, tasks and menus together on the larger display, and described note and task apps such as Notewise, Things and Bear as combining multiple elements on screen at once. Creative tools are also part of the message, with Apple citing apps like Detail that use a Core AI framework to run AI models on device, and Instagram features described as showing more posts and Stories at the same time plus edits across timeline and editing tools.
For gaming, Apple tied developer work to iPhone Duo’s sustained performance claims. Apple said iPhone Duo delivers up to 35 percent better sustained performance than iPhone 17 Pro thanks to A20 Pro and a custom vapor chamber. Gaming examples included Asphalt Legends, Zenless Zone Zero and UnGodly, with Apple describing how controls and views adapt across different ways of holding or unfolding iPhone Duo. Apple also pointed to Apple Arcade titles such as Sneaky Sasquatch and Retrocade designed to take advantage of the fold.
Apple’s announcement also outlines how developers are building these behaviors into their apps. It said developers can use new and updated APIs in the iOS 27.1 SDK, with apps that rely on standard SwiftUI and UIKit components adapting automatically across displays, moving controls to keep them within reach, expanding into multiple columns, and nudging buttons away from the fold. Apple also cited reserved region and arrangement APIs for custom layouts split across the fold, plus a hinge API that lets apps respond to the angle as iPhone Duo opens and closes, along with a Device Hub in Xcode 27.1 for testing in different poses.
Apple’s story comes with a key caveat: it did not provide a list of how many iPhone Duo-optimized apps will launch this Friday, what percentage of the App Store is expected to be optimized soon, or any quantitative performance and user engagement targets. Apple also did not spell out pricing changes for developers or users, focusing instead on app discovery, technical capabilities, and selected partner examples. For now, the practical test will be what shows up in the App Store “Made for iPhone Duo” badge experience and how quickly updates roll out throughout the year.
In the near term, users and developers will likely watch two things: whether app transitions between displays feel as seamless in real usage as Apple describes, and whether the Split View and fold-aware layout tools lead to consistent interface design across major categories like streaming, gaming, work and creative editing. Apple also said more app experiences will follow and that additional workshops are planned, suggesting continued investment in developer enablement beyond Friday’s first wave.
Why It Matters
- Apple’s push shifts the foldable iPhone strategy toward software, aiming to demonstrate differentiated user value through fold-position-aware experiences rather than only new display hardware.
- If app transitions and Split View are broadly adopted, iPhone Duo could become more compelling for media consumption and productivity, categories where switching friction matters.
- The “Made for iPhone Duo” badge and curated collections could shape early discovery behavior in the App Store, influencing which developers prioritize optimization first.
- By providing iOS 27.1 SDK tools such as hinge-aware APIs and reserved region layout features, Apple is lowering implementation barriers, which can accelerate consistent UX across app makers.
