Apple rolls out HomePod mini 2 with Siri AI, smarter multi-user features, and upgraded surround sound
The company says the next-generation compact smart speaker adds a new Siri AI system, improved music and room audio tuning, enhanced connected-home controls, and a first-time four-speaker surround setup when paired with the new Apple TV 4K.
Apple on Tuesday announced HomePod mini 2, the next generation of its compact smart speaker, positioning the device around a more capable Siri AI and deeper audio and home-automation capabilities. The upgrade comes with new color options and expanded ways to use the speaker for music, entertainment and controlling smart-home devices through voice.
HomePod mini 2 will be available to pre-order starting Tuesday in pink, green, blue, white and midnight. Apple said the first deliveries begin Friday, October 30. Siri AI is expected to arrive on HomePod mini 2 in a future software update, making clear that some of the headline capabilities will depend on that rollout rather than being present at launch.
On the audio front, Apple said HomePod mini 2 can deliver room-filling sound as a single speaker, in a stereo pair or through multiroom audio. The company also highlighted a home theater configuration that becomes possible when pairing the speaker with the new Apple TV 4K, described by Apple as the most immersive setup yet, supported by four-speaker surround sound.
The company said the four-speaker experience uses intelligent calibration based on where each speaker is positioned in the room, with timing and audio levels automatically adjusted. In addition to entertainment, Apple said the updated device can function as a speaker for Mac for movies, gaming and FaceTime and other video calls, expanding how the small speaker can be used across devices.
For Siri AI, Apple said the speaker runs on a new architecture built on Apple Foundation Models, enabling what it calls a more conversational assistant. The system is designed to understand personal context and use broad world knowledge for tasks like music discovery and answering questions, with Apple describing improvements in how users can hold a back-and-forth conversation with Siri.
Apple also outlined how the speaker connects to user context across the Apple ecosystem. When paired with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad, HomePod mini 2 can tap into personal context to help users find information in the moment. It also said the system can recognize up to six users in a household by voice and securely connect that context across apps like Messages and timers while playing music and completing other tasks.
Apple described private execution pathways intended to protect user data. It said Siri requests on HomePod mini 2 can be processed on-device or through “Private Cloud Compute,” a cloud feature intended to extend privacy protections. Apple said that when processing uses Private Cloud Compute, data is not stored or made accessible to Apple or others. The company also said the speaker uses “privacy and security” features consistently with its broader approach to digital assistants.
Beyond core assistant features and audio, Apple said HomePod mini 2 continues to serve as a connected-home hub. Through voice commands, it can run smart home actions such as locking a front door, closing a garage and lowering blinds or adjusting the thermostat. Using the Home app, Apple said users can automate accessories and build scenes that control multiple devices at once, and the speaker can securely control accessories from iPhone even when away from home.
Apple also repeated safety-oriented capabilities for HomePod mini, including Sound Recognition that listens for smoke or carbon monoxide alarms. Apple said that if an alarm is detected, it sends a notification immediately to an iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. The company added that the new HomePod mini also works with Apple Home Collection video doorbells and cameras, using Face Recognition to announce who is at the door. Apple did not provide details in Tuesday’s release on pricing, exact availability of specific smart home integrations beyond those mentioned, or the precise timing and supported iPhone or iPad models for all Siri AI features once the software update arrives.
Why It Matters
- HomePod mini 2 indicates Apple’s push to make its home audio and smart-home platform more assistant-driven, with Siri AI framed as the central upgrade rather than just incremental speaker performance.
- By emphasizing automatic calibration for four-speaker surround sound with Apple TV 4K, Apple is trying to compete more directly in the premium home theater-adjacent space without requiring users to buy a full separate surround system.
- Apple’s focus on multi-user recognition and cross-app context reflects an effort to make voice assistants more practical for households, not just individual users.
- Privacy positioning, including Private Cloud Compute, is a differentiator Apple highlights in the consumer voice market where data handling has become a key concern.
