Apple rolls out next-gen Apple Intelligence and a rebuilt Siri, but investors react tepidly

Apple used the June 8 WWDC cycle to preview a major upgrade to its AI platform, positioning next-generation Apple Intelligence and a rebuilt voice assistant called Siri AI as the core of its push to catch up in generative AI. In Apple’s telling, Siri AI is more conversational and more capable across tasks that blend web answers with personal context from messages, photos, and other user data, while also paying close attention to privacy protections built into the system.

At the center of the preview is Apple’s claim of a “bold new architecture” for Apple Intelligence. Apple said its next generation of Apple Foundation Models, which it describes as custom models for the platform, were developed in collaboration with Google and “its Gemini models.” Apple further said the models run both on device and on servers using a privacy-preserving service it calls Private Cloud Compute, which it says is intended to extend iPhone privacy protections to cloud processing without storing or exposing personal data to Apple or others when that service is used.

Siri AI, which Apple said is powered by Apple Intelligence, is designed to work systemwide. Apple said Siri AI can answer questions about what is on the screen, use personal context to search across apps, and, when needed, pull up up-to-date information from the web. Apple also highlighted a dedicated Siri app that lets users revisit prior conversations, with conversational history synced privately across devices through iCloud, and it expanded Visual Intelligence to iPad and Mac in addition to iPhone and Apple Vision Pro.

Apple’s press materials also leaned into productivity features. Apple said Siri AI includes integrated Writing Tools that allow users to write and edit content “virtually anywhere” they type, and it can draft or revise text based on user instructions. Apple also described new ways Visual Intelligence can be invoked, including a dedicated “Siri mode” in the iPhone Camera app and a screenshot-integrated experience on iPad. For multimodal understanding, Apple said Vision Pro users can invoke Siri AI by looking and speaking, using spatial computing.

In its own operational details, Apple indicated the new capabilities will roll out in stages. Apple said Siri AI features are available for developer testing starting June 8 through the Apple Developer Program, and it would arrive as a beta later this year for users with supported devices and English language support, with Apple stating it would quickly expand to additional languages. Apple Intelligence features tied to the upgrade are also scheduled to be available in the fall with iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, and visionOS 27, according to Apple.

The market reaction was less enthusiastic. A Yahoo Finance video report characterized investors’ response as tepid to the next generation of Apple’s AI platform and its Siri update. MarketScreener, publishing the same development, reported that Apple’s stock was down about 1.9% in late trading on June 8 and referenced the “tepid reception” framing in its summary.

Regulatory and regional rollout constraints are likely to complicate how quickly the upgrade can translate into user adoption. Apple said that, due to the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), Siri AI will not be shipped in the EU with iOS 27 and iPadOS 27, though Apple said it will be available on macOS 27, visionOS 27, and watchOS 27. Apple said EU regulators did not accept proposed solutions that Apple argued would preserve privacy and security while enabling compliance.

Still, Apple did not quantify what the change will mean for revenue, device upgrade cycles, or AI feature take rates. It also did not spell out which specific Gemini-related model components are used, how costs scale under Private Cloud Compute, or how performance compares versus rivals in specific benchmarks. What to watch next is whether Apple provides clearer timelines for broader language availability, and whether early beta testing leads to measurable improvements in Siri engagement and developer adoption across Apple platforms. “Private Cloud Compute” rollout details and any follow-up on EU timing will also be central for assessing how fully the platform can launch outside the United States.
