Razorbacks coach John Calipari is adding another name to his early recruiting board, turning his attention to a fast-rising talent from Canada.
Arkansas has extended an offer to 2028 five-star combo guard Liam Mitakaro, according to Yahoo Sports, indicating the Razorbacks’ continued push to land elite perimeter talent in the class. The news arrives as Arkansas keeps building its long-term roster plans under coach John Calipari, whose recruiting footprint has often stretched broadly across the country and around the world.
Mitakaro is described as a standout emerging prospect in the 2028 cycle, with a reported blend of court IQ and shot-making. Those skill traits matter for Arkansas’s type of offensive decision-making, particularly when the team is trying to pressure defenses and create possessions that require a guard to read, attack, and finish in multiple ways.
The commitment-from-afar question in recruiting is timing, and Mitakaro’s offer does not, by itself, indicate when a decision would come. For prospects in the 2028 class, early attention usually means more outreach, more evaluation on both sides, and eventually a narrowing of favorites once camps, high-level games, and official visits begin to stack up.
For Arkansas, the appeal of pursuing a combo guard is roster flexibility. A player who can operate at multiple spots can help a coaching staff match lineups to opponents, especially in matchups where pressure on the ball and late-clock shot quality are both at a premium. While details of Arkansas’s immediate needs are always broader than any single offer, adding a high-ceiling guard target fits the Razorbacks’ recruiting patterns.
There is also a recruiting-management angle. Calipari and his staff are known for moving aggressively once they identify specific profiles that fit their system, and the Mitakaro offer suggests Arkansas believes the guard’s blend of intelligence and scoring ability translates to the college game. At the same time, an offer in June of a young cycle is best understood as “recruiting access,” not a guarantee of final recruitment outcomes.
What to watch next is how Mitakaro’s recruitment develops from here: which other programs begin showing similar urgency, whether Arkansas earns future visit opportunities, and whether Mitakaro’s game against top competition backs up the early scouting report. For Razorbacks fans, this is an early marker of the program’s direction as it looks ahead to the 2028 season-building arc.
