In the latest Chiefs.com installment of its “Artifact of the Month” series, the franchise highlights a helmet tied to early team history, using a physical object to connect modern fans to the American Football League and Chiefs past.
The Kansas City Chiefs are using a simple, tangible item to tell a much larger story. On Thursday, the team introduced its “Artifact of the Month” feature with a look at an unusual piece from the Chiefs Hall of Honor: Jess Richardson’s un-masked helmet, displayed as part of the franchise’s ongoing effort to highlight objects that capture eras fans otherwise only know through records and photographs.
According to the team, many of these artifacts live either on display in the Hall of Honor or in storage within the team’s offices inside SubTropolis, the large underground commercial complex in the Kansas City area. That setting, the Chiefs note, is part of why the objects can feel different than conventional memorabilia, helping preserve and reintroduce the physical history of the club over time.
The helmet is presented as an “emotional connection” bridge, a way to bring fans closer to the Chiefs and American Football League legacy that came before today’s roster, uniforms, and stadium traditions. In other words, the value of the artifact is not only what it is, but what it represents: a direct link to the players and equipment from a formative period in franchise history.
The piece also sets the structure for what comes next. Over the coming year, the Chiefs plan to identify a team artifact and tell its story, treating the series as an evolving history lesson rather than a one-time exhibit. That matters for fans because it indicates how the organization intends to frame its past, emphasizing the human, game-day details that are often lost when history is condensed into headlines.
Jess Richardson is the centerpiece of the item, with the team using the helmet to focus on a specific player and the era he played in. While the artifact format keeps the emphasis on the object, the underlying goal is audience context, encouraging readers to imagine what game preparation looked like when helmets were built differently and when “un-masked” equipment was itself a visible marker of the time.
What to watch now is how the Chiefs keep balancing specificity and narrative. Each installment will depend on the artifact’s story and the degree of documentation available, so the series may highlight well-known names one month and dig into lesser-discussed figures the next. For fans, the practical takeaway is that the Chiefs are building an archive-style storytelling pipeline, using the Hall of Honor collection to refresh how supporters understand the franchise’s roots.
For supporters tracking team identity into the 2026 season, this is not a football-content item in the usual sense. It is more about continuity, reminding the fan base that the Chiefs’ modern football culture is layered on top of American Football League-era experiences, and that sometimes a single piece of equipment can carry more immediacy than a paragraph of history.
