Athletics open roster reshuffle with IL placements for Jacob Wilson and Tyler Soderstrom

The Athletics made a prominent roster adjustment on Monday, placing shortstop Jacob Wilson and outfielder Tyler Soderstrom on the 10-day injured list. The moves reduce Oakland’s immediate infield and outfield depth, and they also set up additional changes to the 40-man roster as the club fills the openings.

Wilson’s IL placement is retroactive to June 26, and the reason listed by the Athletics is right thumb inflammation. As a regular contributor at shortstop, Wilson’s absence forces the Athletics to redistribute reps in a position group that often carries both everyday defensive responsibility and lineup flexibility.

Soderstrom was also placed on the 10-day injured list, with that move retroactive to June 28. The injury listed for the outfielder is a left hip impingement, an issue that can affect both stride length and rotation during fielding and throwing. With Soderstrom sidelined, the Athletics must cover additional outfield innings and at-bats while he recovers.

Along with those IL placements, Oakland also moved left-hander José Suarez to the paternity list, a transaction that impacts the pitching rotation and bullpen usage for the days ahead. Even when the underlying injury picture is separated from non-injury administrative absences, the practical effect is the same for managing innings and appearances over a tight stretch.

To replace the players moved off the active roster, the Athletics recalled right-hander Kade Morris and infielder Darell Hernaiz. Oakland also selected the contract of infielder Joshua Kuroda-Grauer, bringing him onto the active roster. Those additions come with a corresponding procedural step to create room on the 40-man roster.

The Athletics designated right-hander Michael Kelly for assignment to open the needed spot for Kuroda-Grauer. A designation for assignment does not automatically mean a player is released; it initiates a roster process that can result in trades, outright assignment to the minors, or other outcomes depending on timing and options. For Oakland, the immediate goal is simple: maintain roster balance as multiple players are temporarily unavailable.

The Athletics’ next on-field decisions will hinge on how quickly they can stabilize their lineup around the gaps left by Wilson and Soderstrom, and how they sequence their pitching staff with Suarez on the paternity list. Managers often adjust defensive alignments and batting order earlier than fans expect when two regular-position players are both unavailable, and the early days of these transactions can reveal what the team considers its most reliable short-term configuration.
