Big Ten’s late-September title picture begins with playoff chatter, and one “sleeper” debate

With the season only weeks away, the college football landscape is shifting from training-camp storylines to playoff projections. Yahoo Sports used its usual good-natured Ohio State-centered tone to set the stage for what is effectively the sport’s front-end ritual: preseason polls, award watchlists, and early guesses at which teams could earn a seat in the 12-team College Football Playoff.

The calendar matters immediately. The opening weekend is set to begin with North Carolina and TCU squaring off in Ireland, a high-visibility matchup that sets a tone of global reach for the sport. Then, the first Big Ten game arrives with USC hosting San Jose State, giving the league its earliest early-season data point against non-conference opposition.

In the Big Ten’s internal conversation, the playoff favorites are not hard to identify. Ohio State, Oregon, and Indiana show up repeatedly as the common names tied to postseason expectations, and Yahoo Sports points out that those programs have already built recent momentum, including earning spots in the 12-team field in each of the last two seasons. That track record is important because the CFP is less forgiving to teams without a résumé that committee members can quickly process.

The question is where the surprise enters. Yahoo Sports framed the discussion around “which Big Ten team is a sleeper to make the CFP,” but the larger point is about profile building at this stage of the year. A sleeper candidacy usually rests on one or two edges: an offense that can sustain efficiency, a defense that limits big-play damage, or a schedule path that protects a team from early résumé-denting results.

Preseason discourse also reflects the award-watch ecosystem. When leagues release watch lists and preseason honors, those lists influence how fans and analysts evaluate team readiness. The Big Ten, in particular, gets measured through star power and experience, but it also gets judged on whether lesser-discussed units can deliver in late October and November when the margin for error shrinks.

There is, however, a caveat that comes with any preseason “sleeper” label. The CFP bracket rewards consistency, and early-season results against both conference and marquee non-conference opponents often determine whether a team is treated as a contender or categorized as a “maybe” later. For that reason, the first waves of games this season will do more than establish momentum, they will help define the playoff narrative the rest of the conference must navigate.
