ESPN analyst Bill Connelly projects the Fighting Irish to dethrone Georgia in the 2026 CFP national championship, pointing to unusually strong returning production and a veteran-leaning coaching foundation under Marcus Freeman.
ESPN analyst Bill Connelly has Notre Dame positioned as the team to beat when the 2026 College Football Playoff season reaches its final destination, forecasting the Fighting Irish to defeat Georgia in the national championship game and end the program’s title drought.
In Connelly’s framework, the main fuel for Notre Dame’s leap is what he calls unprecedented returning production. The idea is straightforward: with more experienced bodies coming back, a team can compress the learning curve that typically comes with major turnover, and it can spend practice time refining scheme rather than rebuilding it.
Connelly also ties Notre Dame’s title case to coaching continuity. The prediction is anchored by Freeman as head coach and by what the analyst describes as a veteran coaching staff, suggesting the Irish should be able to translate preseason expectations into execution once fall camp begins and game-plan work shifts into weekly preparation.
The prediction lands with context on the calendar. As of mid-June, the 2026 season is still ahead, but the off-season groundwork is largely complete, and Notre Dame’s opener is set for September at Lambeau Field against the Wisconsin Badgers, a staging that underscores how quickly the Irish will be tested in a high-visibility nonconference environment.
Georgia’s presence in the title picture is notable because it reflects how Connelly is treating the Bulldogs as a perennial national contender rather than a one-year peak. In the analyst’s projection, the matchup becomes a clash between Georgia’s recent elite profile and Notre Dame’s claim that its returning production and veteran coaching advantage can carry it through the playoff bracket’s pressure points.
Even with a credible analyst making a credible pick, this is still a preseason forecast, not a measure of what will happen in late November. College football title routes can turn on execution swings, health and availability, and how quickly teams handle their most uncomfortable early-game adjustments.
What to watch next for Notre Dame and the rest of the title group is whether the Irish can convert “returning production” and coaching steadiness into consistent performance when the schedule intensifies, starting with their trip to Lambeau against Wisconsin and then moving into the stretch where playoff positioning typically begins to separate contenders from pretenders.
