Buffalo signed running back Ian Wheeler to a one-year deal after a championship run with the Louisville Kings, where he was named United Bowl MVP.
The Buffalo Bills have signed running back Ian Wheeler to a one-year contract, adding a proven ball carrier to their backfield group ahead of the next season.
Wheeler enters the NFL coming off a standout performance in the United Football League with the Louisville Kings. In that championship season, he was named United Bowl MVP, a distinction that indicates he played a central role when Louisville won the league’s title game.
The signing also reunites the Bills with a former Chicago Bears running back. Wheeler’s NFL experience gives Buffalo another option with familiarity in the pro game, while his recent UFL production adds recent-game momentum to a position group that is always under pressure to stay healthy and consistent.
Buffalo’s decision reflects a common roster-building approach in the offseason: combining organizational needs for depth and reliability with the availability of experienced players who have stayed sharp in spring or summer football. A one-year deal can be a practical fit for both sides, giving the Bills a chance to evaluate Wheeler’s fit while giving him a direct path to compete for playing time.
For Wheeler, the move represents a return to the NFL stage after excelling in the UFL. The transition from a UFL title run to an NFL training camp setting is not automatic, but being recognized as the United Bowl’s top performer suggests he can shoulder a major role when a game tightens late.
The Bills will now be able to look at Wheeler’s skill set in their own system, including how he handles pass protection, route timing in the flat, and the physical demands of an NFL workload. Those areas often determine whether a depth running back becomes a weekly contributor or remains a situational option.
Going forward, Buffalo’s next roster evaluations will likely focus on how Wheeler performs in offseason work and preseason-style reps, particularly alongside the players already on the roster at running back. His ability to translate his championship-level production into consistent practice performance will shape how significant this signing becomes.
