BlackRock to add Ethena’s USDe to Aladdin risk platform, with BUIDL slated as Ethena reserve asset

The move expands BlackRock’s Aladdin risk management tooling to support exposure to USDe, while Ethena’s whitelabel stablecoins are positioned to rely on BUIDL as a main reserve asset, according to a report.

BlackRock is planning an update to its Aladdin risk management platform that would add support for Ethena’s USDe, a dollar-linked digital token. The change, reported by Bankless, is framed as part of BlackRock’s broader effort to bring more crypto-linked instruments into institutional portfolio and risk workflows.

Aladdin, BlackRock’s long-running suite used by asset managers for portfolio construction, analytics, and risk reporting, has become a key interface for how large investors model non-traditional assets. Adding USDe would allow users to incorporate the instrument into existing risk processes rather than handling it through separate, external systems.

The same report also ties the platform update to Ethena’s stablecoin reserve setup. Bankless said BUIDL is expected to become the main reserve asset backing Ethena’s whitelabel stablecoins, with the reserve arrangement designed to support the tokens’ dollar linkage.

In practice, reserve assets matter because they influence what an issuer (or a reserve administrator) holds against outstanding tokens, and they can affect how institutions think about liquidity and redemption dynamics during stress scenarios. By reflecting the USDe instrument within Aladdin, BlackRock is effectively pushing institutional monitoring closer to how investors already assess traditional holdings like cash equivalents or short-dated fixed income.

BlackRock’s role here is as a platform provider rather than as a token issuer, at least based on what is described in the report. The update suggests demand from institutional customers who want consistent risk measurement across stablecoins and related crypto exposures, particularly those structured to behave like cash or cash-like collateral.

For Ethena, aligning its token mechanics with a widely used institutional risk platform could be an operational step toward broader market acceptance. It may also reduce friction for custody, reporting, and internal risk teams that prefer standardized inputs over bespoke analytics.

Even with that, the report does not spell out implementation details. It does not say when the change will go live, what specific risk measures will be available for USDe within Aladdin, whether any haircuts or scenario parameters will differ from other crypto-linked exposures, or which Aladdin customer segments will receive early access.

Why It Matters

  • Bringing USDe into Aladdin could lower operational barriers for institutions that want consistent risk reporting for stablecoin-linked exposures.
  • If BUIDL is indeed the main reserve asset for Ethena’s whitelabel stablecoins, the choice of reserve can shape how institutions evaluate liquidity and redemption assumptions.
  • The move indicates that mainstream portfolio and risk systems are increasingly incorporating stablecoin-linked instruments alongside traditional assets.
  • The exact timing and how risk parameters are implemented will be critical for assessing the real-world impact on institutional allocations.
