In a Sunday wrap-up, The Hockey News pointed to a fast-rising Pittsburgh defenseman as a possible pursuit for Columbus if he becomes available this offseason.
The week’s Columbus Blue Jackets coverage from The Hockey News added one notable theme for offseason planning, the team should be prepared to go after a breakout defenseman already drawing attention in Pittsburgh. The framing was straightforward: if the Penguins’ player ultimately tests free agency, Columbus should at least consider making him a serious option.
The recommendation is the kind of roster-building thought exercise NHL teams routinely run during the open-market window. For Columbus, the appeal of a “breakout” defenseman is that it targets a specific need category, adding a high-impact player from the blue line who can help drive play, stabilize transition, and grow into top-pair responsibility. The article’s emphasis, as presented in the wrap-up, is less about a one-time fix and more about identifying a player who could become a long-term building block.
Pittsburgh’s side of the story matters, too. The wrap-up positions the defenseman as having separated himself from the pack, meaning the interest is not being driven purely by reputation or past pedigree. Instead, the notion is that performance has put him on the radar, the kind of development that can change how both teams approach their own offseason plans.
If the defenseman does reach free agency, the decision becomes a test of Columbus’ priorities for the upcoming season. Pursuing a defender who has already established an elevated role can be a faster path to improving overall structure than waiting for internal progression. It also introduces practical challenges, including how Columbus would manage financial commitment and how it would weigh other needs against a potentially high-demand skill set.
It is important to keep expectations measured. The wrap-up is a recommendation within a Sunday recap format, not an official report of a contract, negotiation, or roster move. The key conditional language is availability, Columbus is being encouraged to consider pursuing the player specifically if he “tests free agency,” which means the actual market outcome, timing, and player preferences would still determine whether the idea becomes real.
As the offseason develops, Columbus’ decision-making will likely hinge on whether Pittsburgh keeps the player off the open market or whether market conditions produce a real opportunity. For Blue Jackets fans, the next watch item is not just whether interest exists, but whether Columbus is able to convert that interest into a concrete pursuit once free agency is underway, and how any addition would fit with the team’s broader defensive group.
