Max Scherzer’s late IL placement forced Toronto into another bullpen game, and the Blue Jays used short-start planning to manage a brutal 16-games-in-16-days stretch.
The Blue Jays got a 3-0 result Wednesday night against the Red Sox, but the path to that clean score was not what Toronto would have drawn up as its first option. According to MLB’s team coverage, scheduled starter Max Scherzer was placed on the injured list Wednesday afternoon, leaving the Blue Jays to adjust only hours before first pitch.
With Scherzer unavailable, the game turned into a bullpen-forward plan built around an opener-style sequence rather than a traditional starter-through-the-six or starter-through-the-seven pattern. The core idea was to keep the late innings manageable by matching relievers to opposing hitters and staying efficient across a short runway before the next game in what the team described as an extremely demanding stretch.
Toronto has been wrestling with workload and rotation volatility while sustaining momentum, and the 16-games-in-16-days framing matters because it compresses recovery time. In that kind of schedule, even healthy pitchers can be forced into higher pitch counts earlier in games, or into turning over the bullpen more frequently, simply because the calendar does not allow the usual reset. The Blue Jays’ ability to win without a conventional start speaks to how seriously they have been leaning into bullpen games as a roster-management tool.
Against the Red Sox, the scoreline did most of the explaining. A 3-0 win indicates Toronto kept Boston from turning early advantages into sustained offense, and it also suggests the bullpen plan held up once the lineup change triggered by Scherzer’s IL move was already baked in. Even when bullpen games are planned, the challenge is sequencing, because the first few batters faced by the “opener” and the transition into middle relief can determine how the rest of the outing looks.
For the Blue Jays, Wednesday’s adjustment was also a reminder that the season’s margin for error can shrink quickly. When a high-profile scheduled starter is removed late, the bullpen becomes the engine of the entire evening, and the team’s next several days become the real measuring stick. The effectiveness of a bullpen game is not only whether it finishes that night, but whether it preserves enough usable arms to avoid compounding stress as the dense stretch continues.
What to watch next is whether Toronto can keep getting reliable innings from its relief group without forcing emergency usage patterns later in the week. In a 16-games-in-16-days scenario, small differences in rest days and pitch management can translate into larger differences by the weekend or into a road swing, particularly if additional roster changes occur.
