The Tigers are still waiting for the first glimpse of the 2026-27 roster on the court, but head coach Brad Brownell has already framed transfer guard Cole Certa as a three-point difference-maker with a familiar Clemson feel.
Clemson basketball has not played a minute of the 2026-27 season, yet the early buzz around the program is already centered on a new transfer: Cole Certa. In discussing Certa’s arrival, Clemson head coach Brad Brownell tied the move to what Clemson fans remember from the three-point shooting prowess that once defined an earlier Tigers standout, using the comparison as a roadmap for what Certa could bring on the floor now. For a program that relies on stretches of spacing and shooting to free up possessions, the early storyline is straightforward: can Certa become the kind of perimeter threat that forces defenses to pick a poison at the end of a closeout?
The specific through-line in Brownell’s framing was three-point ability. According to the report from Yahoo Sports, Brownell compared the profile of Certa to a former player who took Clemson by storm with his outside shooting from years ago. While the exact name of that earlier player is not included in the available summary, the coaching message is still clear. Clemson is not treating Certa as a depth add-on. Brownell’s comparison positions Certa as a potential repeating weapon: the sort of shooter who can change the rhythm of a possession and shift a defense’s baseline calculus from the moment he crosses the arc.
Certa’s arrival also matters because it reflects how Clemson is building its roster around offensive spacing and shot creation. The modern college game asks more of perimeter players than just “making shots,” with defenders needing to respect range, closeouts needing to be firm without becoming overcommitted, and decision-making having to speed up when the ball finds the right side. Brownell’s public comparison suggests Certa is viewed through that lens, as someone whose shooting affects more than just the score column.
For context, Clemson’s off-to-the-side roster work comes with a built-in timetable. The first look at any transfer’s fit arrives only when practices and games begin, and the Tigers are still in that waiting period, with the 2026-27 slate not having started. That timing is why Brownell’s comments carry extra weight right now. With the season not yet underway, the coaching staff’s characterization of Certa becomes one of the few available indicators of role, usage, and expectations, even if it cannot be verified on the court until later.
A transfer like Certa also carries roster implications, even before anyone takes a basket in a regular-season game. When a head coach singles out a shooter as a player comparison point, it often indicates that the program intends to build set-ups for that skill, whether through catch-and-shoot looks, off-ball relocation, or actions designed to create a clean pocket for a three. The report’s framing suggests that Clemson sees Certa’s outside shooting as a lever the offense can pull repeatedly, not a one-off trait.
That said, there are always caveats in how early transfer storylines translate into outcomes. Three-point ability is only part of the evaluation, and the college environment asks shooters to adapt to different shot rhythms, scouting details, and defensive coverages. What Brownell’s comparison does provide is a clear indicator of how Clemson wants Certa to affect the spacing map, which is often the first step toward a bigger offensive role.
What to watch next is simple. Clemson will eventually need to show how Certa is integrated into its offensive structure under live game pressure, including how defenses react when he is positioned for early perimeter touches. The Tigers’ first real measure will be whether his shooting threat creates secondary advantages for teammates and whether his fit holds up in high-leverage moments, not just in non-conference warmups. Until Clemson tips off in 2026-27, Brownell’s comparison stands as the clearest, coach-supplied clue to how the Tigers hope Certa will change the look of their offense.
For now, the early story in Clemson’s offseason is about a familiar pattern: a coach pointing to a three-point profile that previously made a difference, and expecting a new transfer to provide a similar spark. Whether Certa becomes that exact kind of threat will be decided when games begin, but the intent is visible. Clemson wants its spacing to be respected, and it believes Certa’s shooting can help make that happen.
