Ohio State’s 2027 quarterback picture got a little less settled Monday as Brady Edmunds, a longtime Buckeyes pledge, spent time on an official visit with UCLA. Edmunds remains committed to Ryan Day’s program, but the trip matters because it comes at a moment when Ohio State is trying to add more than one quarterback to the 2027 class. In recruiting, a committed player taking additional visits typically does not mean an immediate flip, but it does indicate that the decision is still fluid enough to justify other evaluations.

Edmunds’ own words provided the clearest window into how open the process still feels. Ahead of his UCLA visit, Edmunds told Rivals that “everything is fine with Ohio State,” while also saying he did not want to close the door on anyone yet. He framed UCLA as a convenient, local option and tied his decision to the reality that there is still a long stretch from now until signing day. The point of emphasis for Buckeyes fans is not that Edmunds criticized Ohio State. It’s that he publicly kept the door ajar while continuing the recruiting calendar.

That matters more because Ohio State is not recruiting Edmunds in a vacuum. Multiple reports around the situation indicate the Buckeyes want to take two quarterbacks in the class of 2027, and that they currently have only one committed at the position. With so little margin for error at quarterback, Ohio State’s staff has to balance two tasks at once: recruiting a second quarterback while also trying to keep the first commitment from turning into a long-term uncertainty.

UCLA’s push is also easier to understand in today’s college football recruiting environment. UCLA is now a Big Ten program, so this is not merely a cross-country detour. It is a visit from a conference member that can build recruiting relationships and sell a path that includes early opportunity and proximity to home. Reports also said UCLA leaned into star power to reach Edmunds, including messaging tied to Troy Aikman, reflecting how aggressively the Bruins have treated the moment.

Even after the UCLA visit, the timeline suggests Ohio State is not out of control of the narrative. Edmunds is scheduled to return for another official visit to Columbus later in June, with reports placing that trip on June 17-21. That sets up a short sequence that recruiters care about: the “what did you see there” phase during the UCLA visit, followed by the “what makes your commitment feel real” phase on the home official. If Edmunds comes away from Columbus reaffirmed, the UCLA visit becomes a normal part of the process. If he comes away still unconvinced, Ohio State will have to react quickly with its next-quarterback target set.

For Ohio State, the immediate risk is not simply losing one pledge. It is the ripple effect. A coaching staff seeking two quarterbacks cannot treat the first commitment as guaranteed, especially when another quarterback could be chasing a clearer depth-chart path. The follow-up that matters most now is whether Ohio State can keep Edmunds engaged through the next official visit window while also building enough leverage with its other quarterback recruiting priorities to prevent a scenario where the class ends with fewer quarterback commitments than intended.
