With the All-Star break approaching, Milwaukee faces a tight stretch of games. Manager Pat Murphy will undergo surgery to address a ruptured disc, a development that raises questions about how the Brewers handle the immediate stretch leading into and through their next series.
Milwaukee manager Pat Murphy will undergo back surgery to remove a ruptured disc, with the procedure planned before the Brewers begin a series against the Chicago Cubs, according to MLB’s team release posted June 20. The timing matters for a Brewers club that, like many contenders around midseason, is about to enter a compressed schedule window where day-to-day decisions and bullpen management can carry extra weight.
The release also framed Thursday as an off-day for the Brewers, a day most of the organization can treat as recovery time before a demanding run of games. In that same span, the Brewers are set to play 18 games in 17 days leading up to the All-Star break, a stretch that typically requires careful workload planning for position players, pitchers, and coaches.
For Murphy, the decision to address the issue directly introduces an operational challenge right as the team’s calendar tightens. Back injuries and recovery timelines vary widely in professional baseball, and even when a procedure is scheduled in advance, the practical question becomes who is available to lead day-to-day while the manager’s medical needs are handled.
The Brewers’ planning for game management has become more important as teams push deeper into June and start relying on established bullpen roles, situational hitting plans, and defensive alignments that are often adjusted only in small ways. A midseason change in who is making those calls, even temporarily, can affect the rhythm of late innings and how the staff sequences relievers across consecutive starts.
Murphy’s surgery is also a reminder that the managerial role is not insulated from the rigors of the season. The same compressed travel and the same near-daily demands on preparation apply to coaches as they do to players, and the release places the procedure squarely in the middle of the kind of schedule that leaves little margin for extended absences.
Looking ahead, the Brewers’ next series against the Cubs will be a key marker for how the club organizes in Murphy’s absence around a tight sequence of games. Observers will likely watch who handles managerial responsibilities in the dugout, how decisions are made for pitching changes and pinch-hitting timing, and whether the Brewers keep their late-inning patterns stable during the stretch.
For now, the public information is limited to the surgical plan and its placement on the calendar. As the organization works through the immediate period after the procedure, the most important details to monitor will be the Brewers’ in-game management structure and how consistently the team can maintain the execution required during an 18-in-17 run.
