Brewers promote Luis Lara from Nashville, option Blake Perkins ahead of Cardinals doubleheader

The Milwaukee Brewers recalled outfield prospect Luis Lara from Triple-A Nashville on Tuesday, setting up his major league debut during a doubleheader against the St. Louis Cardinals. The promotion comes less than a month after Lara signed a seven-year contract worth $31 million, a move the Brewers have treated as a long-term commitment to an athletic, defense-first player who has also taken a meaningful step offensively this season.

According to reporting tied to the Brewers’ roster activity, Milwaukee also optioned outfielder Blake Perkins to Nashville before the Cardinals series. That two-step transaction reflects the practical challenge of playing every day in the heat of a pennant-race schedule, while also rewarding minor league production with a roster spot when the timing is right.

Lara, 21, had been steady for Nashville and is arriving with a clear statistical profile that has separated him from many prospects at his stage. In 78 games at Triple-A, he hit.321 with a.432 on-base percentage and.470 slugging percentage, adding nine home runs, 42 RBIs, and 24 stolen bases. Last year at Double-A Biloxi, he batted.257 with a.369 on-base percentage and.343 slugging percentage in 136 games, numbers that suggest a jump in consistency rather than a one-month spike.

The contract details also explain why the Brewers were willing to accelerate Lara’s path. The deal runs through 2032 and includes club options for 2033, 2034, and 2035. That structure gives Milwaukee flexibility and cost certainty while allowing the organization to continue prioritizing development, even as specific roles open up at the major league level.

This is not the only long-term prospect introduction Milwaukee has made recently. Reporting also notes it marked the second time this year the Brewers have called up a player after signing a multi-year agreement, with shortstop Cooper Pratt also making his MLB debut earlier in the summer following an eight-year, $50.75 million contract signing.

Perkins’ move to Triple-A underscores a typical tradeoff in roster management: the Brewers can keep a veteranized depth option in the system while creating a spot for a prospect whose performance has changed the equation. Perkins, 29, had been hitting.157 with a.250 on-base percentage, with one home run, 11 RBIs, and three stolen bases in 53 major league games, numbers that made it harder to justify regular at-bats as the club looked to inject new energy into its outfield mix.

For the rest of the Cardinals series, the key storyline will be how the Brewers deploy Lara in games that include both everyday lineup considerations and specialized late-inning needs. His calling card has long been defense, but the offensive surge at Triple-A is the reason for the timing now.
