Brewers seize an early lead and hold off the Rays in Game 1 of the World Series

Milwaukee scored first, got five solid innings from Jacob Misiorowski, and survived a late rally to beat Tampa Bay 3-2 in front of a loud American Family Field crowd.

The Brewers struck early, then withstood the kind of late, high-leverage pressure a World Series is built on, defeating the Rays 3-2 in Game 1 at American Family Field in Milwaukee.

Milwaukee put the first runs on the board in the first inning. Jackson Chourio led off with a single and Christian Yelich followed with a line drive that became a hit for an early 1-0 edge. Yelich eventually scored on an RBI triple by William Contreras later in the inning, and the Brewers built a 2-0 lead.

Jacob Misiorowski, making the start the club needed after questions about his shorter postseason outings, delivered an efficient, starter-style effort. The right-hander threw a 103.5-mph first pitch and worked five innings, allowing one earned run on four hits with a walk and three strikeouts.

The Rays narrowed the gap in the fourth. Junior Caminero hit a 112.7-mph line drive to center for a double that helped set up runs, and Jonathan Aranda scored on a Liam Hicks groundout to make it 2-1.

Milwaukee added an insurance run in the seventh. Chourio singled and Cooper Pratt scored Chourio from second to push the lead to 3-1 off Rays reliever Kevin Kelly.

In the ninth, the Rays loaded the bases off Trevor Megill and got a promising sequence that initially looked like it could end the game. After a replay overturned a would-be game-ending double play, one run came home and two runners remained in scoring position, but Megill finished the job by striking out Jonny DeLuca for the final out.

Why It Matters

  • The result gives Milwaukee the first swing in the Fall Classic, setting a tone of early offense paired with late-game execution.
  • Misiorowski’s five-inning performance answered a key question about workload and effectiveness in a high-stakes Game 1.
  • The finish highlights how quickly World Series outcomes can pivot on replay, even after an apparent ending play.
  • Tampa Bay’s late run shows the Rays remain dangerous in close games, making Game 2 leverage especially important for both clubs.
