Broncos mourn the passing of former longtime scout Cornell Green

A 28-year Broncos front-office presence and 46-year NFL career ended with the death of Cornell Green, whose scouting work helped shape the franchise during its era of sustained championship success.

The Denver Broncos said former longtime scout Cornell Green has died. Green, an Oklahoma City native, spent nearly three decades in Denver’s front office and was 86 years old, according to the team.

Green arrived in Denver in 1987 after a Hall of Fame-caliber playing career with the Dallas Cowboys. The Broncos noted that he joined forces with former Cowboys teammate and Broncos head coach Dan Reeves when he began his second NFL career in personnel and scouting.

Across 46 total years in the NFL, Green was credited by the Broncos with playing a role in shaping one of the franchise’s most successful stretches. From 1987 through the 2015 season, Denver won more than 60 percent of its games, claimed 11 division titles, six AFC championships, and three Super Bowls, the team said.

The Broncos also highlighted Green’s recognition within league scouting circles, including being named AFC Scout of the Year in 2010 by the Fritz Pollard Alliance.

Before football became his primary sport, the team described Green as a standout 6-foot-4 forward at Utah State. He was an All-American in 1961 and 1962 and later entered the NFL after being selected in the NBA draft by the Chicago Zephyrs in 1962, per the Broncos.

Why It Matters

  • Green’s two-decade front-office tenure helped define how Denver evaluated and assembled talent during its most successful modern stretch.
  • His career illustrates the long-term impact scouts can have on roster construction, beyond any single draft or free-agent cycle.
  • The Broncos’ recognition of his scouting relationships underscores how institutional knowledge is treated as part of team-building.
  • Green’s path from elite athlete to NFL personnel work reflects a broader football ecosystem where experience and evaluation skills travel across roles.
