Denver erased a 24-13 fourth-quarter deficit, then stopped Kansas City at the goal line in the final seconds to earn its biggest comeback of the season.
Denver answered Kansas City’s early control with a fourth-quarter surge that ended in a goal-line stop for a 28-24 win on Monday night, moving the Broncos into first place in the AFC West, according to Denver’s official game recap.
The comeback swung in part on two fourth-down touchdown conversions in the fourth quarter. Denver scored on all three of its red-zone trips in the final stretch, after the Chiefs had entered the game having not allowed a red-zone touchdown in its previous eight trips over the prior three games, the team reported.
Trailing late, the Broncos highlighted a big-play drive from rookie Jonah Coleman. Denver’s longest offensive play of the afternoon came on a 51-yard catch-and-run that set up the go-ahead scoring sequence, the recap said.
With the game tied and time expiring, the key moment arrived at the goal line. After Kenneth Walker pushed the Chiefs to the Denver 1-yard line with 15 seconds left, Denver held on second-and-goal and third-and-goal. On fourth-and-goal, Jonathon Cooper got pressure and Malcolm Roach sacked Patrick Mahomes to end the game, the Broncos reported.
Denver’s defensive finish also came with a late-game discipline factor. A would-be decisive scoring play was wiped out by a Jaylon Moore false start on a snap with four seconds remaining, according to the team recap, which then set up the final fourth-and-goal stand.
