As the NBA draft approaches, evaluators are focusing on a trio of college forwards whose size, shooting and playmaking profiles have carried them to the center of draft-season conversations.
NBA draft season is turning its attention toward a familiar archetype in college basketball: the blue-chip forward. In this year’s prospect conversation, three names keep surfacing as central figures to watch, BYU’s AJ Dybantsa, Duke’s Cameron Boozer and North Carolina’s Caleb Wilson. The framing is straightforward, these are forwards whose games translate beyond college, with scouts and analysts emphasizing shot-making, offensive skill packages and the capacity to grow into higher-level roles.
AJ Dybantsa, who has been widely discussed as a leading candidate for the No. 1 overall pick in the NBA draft, is the centerpiece of the conversation for teams seeking a long-term offensive catalyst. The common thread in how evaluators describe him is that his skill set is not limited to one facet of scoring. Instead, draft talk has leaned on the combination of scoring talent and the ability to create advantages against different defender types, an attribute teams often associate with franchise-building prospects.
Duke’s Cameron Boozer is part of the same wave, but the focus shifts toward versatility and impact. In the prospect landscape, Boozer represents a forward profile teams can envision contributing quickly while also expanding their role as professional spacing, pace and defensive schemes differ from college. For programs and scouts, that matters in two ways: it answers the question of immediate utility and it gives a path to offensive evolution that franchises can sell to fans and coaching staffs.
UNC’s Caleb Wilson rounds out the trio of forwards drawing national attention. Like the others, Wilson is being positioned as a prospect whose strengths can be developed into a clear NBA role. For teams looking at forward depth in the draft, the value is not only the highest ceiling outcomes. It is also the likelihood that a player can handle real minutes, create offense as the system evolves, and fit alongside different roster constructions.
Importantly, draft prospects are always evaluated against a moving set of benchmarks, including individual workouts, team needs and how a prospect’s strengths show up against NBA-aligned athleticism and defense. With that in mind, it is best to treat rankings and “favorite” labels as part of the broader narrative rather than a guaranteed outcome. The NBA draft remains the moment where those evaluations converge, but it also represents a clearinghouse for surprises, where player roles can be clarified quickly once teams see how prospects perform across interviews, measurements and competitive settings.
The next thing to watch is how draft-season evaluations line up across teams as the selections near. For Dybantsa, the question is whether the top-of-the-board expectations keep strengthening as teams get deeper views into his decision-making and consistency. For Boozer and Wilson, the key watch points are how each forward’s strengths translate into NBA shot creation and spacing, and what kind of developmental timeline teams anticipate as they build their rosters.
