Police say a suspect’s online manifesto with extremist-style themes may increase the risk of further violence, prompting investigators to urge public caution while they continue to identify and trace the materials.
Canadian police issued a warning about the risk of copycat attacks after a deadly shootout in Montreal that left three people dead, according to reporting on June 23. Investigators said the attack was linked to an assailant who later posted a lengthy online manifesto, raising concerns that others may attempt to emulate or build on the content.
The warning followed the investigation into the Montreal incident, which police described as an armed confrontation resulting in three deaths. Authorities did not, in the reporting reviewed for this article, provide further confirmed details about the victims, the circumstances leading up to the shooting, or whether multiple locations were involved.
Reporting said the manifesto contained themes consistent with “incel”-style extremist grievances and called for what was described as “a new bloodletting.” Police stated that the document was posted online by a far-right outlet, which they said was part of why they were alerting the public to potential follow-on threats.
In their public communication, police emphasized that the risk of copycat violence can rise after attacks that are accompanied by published manifestos, especially when those documents are distributed through ideological or extremist channels. Authorities asked people to remain vigilant and to report suspicious online or in-person activity to police.
Investigators also indicated that the manifesto itself is a focus of follow-up work, including verifying the suspect’s authorship and assessing how the material was shared. The reporting did not specify whether police had identified additional suspects beyond the person named as the assailant, nor whether any arrests had been made in connection with the online posting.
The warning underscores how quickly online distribution can shape security risk after mass-casualty incidents, particularly when attackers use publication as part of their message. Police efforts in Montreal are expected to continue with a focus on tracing the dissemination of the manifesto, assessing whether related accounts or networks exist, and evaluating whether there are credible, immediate threats.
For the public, officials’ primary message was to treat the situation as an active investigation that may involve further danger, with authorities urging community members to report concerns rather than engage with or amplify the content associated with the attack.
