Arizona’s team release revisits the defensive-picture stakes before camp begins, using the Sept. 13 road meeting with the Chargers as a lens for what the starting group could look like.
Arizona’s countdown to training camp is already underway, and the team is framing the first wave of roster questions through defense. In a June installment, the Cardinals’ official site previewed a fresh look at what its defensive starters might be when Arizona takes the field in September against the Los Angeles Chargers.
The timing is deliberate. The Cardinals note that training camp report day is just over a month away, with camp set to begin July 22, meaning a significant portion of the team-building work will shift from offseason evaluation to on-field competition. For fans and staff, the “starter” conversation becomes more concrete once pads go on and roles start stabilizing.
The centerpiece of the release is the author’s projected defensive lineup for the Sept. 13 matchup in Los Angeles. While June articles in the NFL often blend roster reality with educated guesswork, the Cardinals are essentially treating the season-opening opponent as a target for how the depth chart could be shaped by the time camp ends and the preseason turns over.
Even without locking in specific names in the preview material, the approach points to the typical defensive priorities that surface during camp. Coaches generally look for consistent front-seven play in gap control and pass rush responsibility, along with secondary clarity on coverage calls and communication. By centering the projection on September, the Cardinals are also indicating that these camp battles carry immediate meaning rather than being purely developmental.
For a team building toward the regular season, a defensive “starter group” projection does more than satisfy preseason curiosity. It also helps map the kinds of packages the defense expects to run early in the year, and it sets a baseline for how quickly the team can simplify personnel if rotations need to be pared down.
The article’s structure, described by the team as “For What It’s Worth In June, Defensive Edition,” reflects another reality of the NFL calendar: coaches and players may be present and working long before camps officially start, but the information gap for outsiders remains large until practices produce repeatable evidence. June can outline possibilities; late July and August tend to confirm them or change them.
As the Cardinals move into the July 22 camp window, the most practical question becomes which defensive roles start to look permanent as practices progress and the preseason closes in. That is where projections either gain traction or get pushed aside, and it is also where the September opener against the Chargers becomes more than a date on the calendar.
With the defensive depth chart still subject to training-camp outcomes, the June release functions best as an early compass. The next checkpoints to watch are who earns first-team reps as camp matures, how the coaching staff balances starters with rotation players, and whether the defense’s projected structure aligns with what the team plans to use in the season opener in Los Angeles.
