In the same explanation, Marmol said the team wanted to “buy McGreevy an extra day,” pointing to recovery as a meaningful factor, and he referenced the importance of spacing out McGreevy and Andre Pallante.

Beyond workload, Marmol tied the opener concept to matchup management. MLB reported that the Cardinals believed the Svanson-into-Zimmermann sequence could produce more favorable looks at specific points against the Brewers’ lineup, depending on how Milwaukee’s manager Pat Murphy handled batting order and pitching changes if St. Louis had simply announced Zimmermann as the starter from the jump.
