THE APEX TIMES
With the Panthers set to begin the 2026 season against the Chicago Bears, the team’s fan site has paused its familiar jersey-number countdown and instead is rolling through a franchise all-time ranking.
Carolina’s path to the 2026 season opener is being marked in a new way. On June 20, Cat Scratch Reader, a Panthers-focused outlet, posted the latest installment of its opener countdown, using the “85 days remaining” milestone to explain a departure from its usual format. Instead of highlighting an active roster player whose jersey number matches the day on the calendar, the site is now counting down its own list of the Top 100 Panthers of all time.
The decision is meant to avoid the constraints of a jersey-number gimmick and to broaden the cast to include players who defined eras of Panthers football. In the outlet’s description of the project, the list is not tied to jersey numbers, and it does not require that a player wore a particular number during their time in Carolina. The editors characterize the approach as designed to be straightforward and non-controversial, even though it necessarily reflects a subjective ranking.
The opener reference point is the same as in prior years: the Panthers begin the 2026 campaign against the Chicago Bears. The countdown therefore serves as both a calendar marker and a long-running fan ritual, giving readers a daily talking point as the season approaches. For Carolina fans, this kind of pre-season programming is often less about tactical football detail and more about maintaining a steady drumbeat of storylines that keep the offseason from feeling dormant.
Cat Scratch Reader has said it has run a final-100-days countdown for at least a decade. That history matters because it frames the site’s new Top 100 concept as an evolution, not an abandonment. Readers who have followed the project before will recognize the timing structure, even if the “player-of-the-day” logic is changing. The change also highlights a common tension in offseason content: jersey numbers are useful for a gimmick, but they can become limiting once the roster evolves or when a franchise’s most meaningful contributors are not easily mapped to any single numeric pattern.
The Top 100 format also has a built-in advantage for narrative variety. A ranking across franchise history can support comparisons of different roles, leadership styles, and statistical eras without needing to match today’s roster. While the Panthers’ modern roster can change quickly, all-time lists can stay consistent from one countdown year to the next, allowing the site to revisit the franchise’s identity through a lens that is larger than the current depth chart.
At the same time, the project’s scope raises an expected caveat: a Top 100 ranking is inherently debatable. Different fans, analysts, and historians can place varying emphasis on postseason performance, peak production, longevity, and impact. Cat Scratch Reader’s stated goal is to keep the methodology non-controversial, but the very act of ranking means there will still be disagreements, particularly around the margins where players’ careers and eras overlap in significance.
For what to watch next, the most immediate storyline is the ongoing progression of the Top 100 countdown as it approaches the season opener. As the list continues to roll out, readers will be looking for which types of players the editors prioritize, such as multi-year franchise anchors, single-era stars, or those whose value was tied to specific football traits like coverage skill, run-stopping consistency, or clutch moments. Separately, the Bears-Panthers matchup remains the fixed anchor for the calendar countdown, keeping the offseason tied to the opening game rather than letting attention drift too far from the season’s start date.
In a broader sense, the countdown illustrates how NFL seasons are sold and felt long before kickoff. In addition to official schedule information and team-building reports, fan media fills the gap with rituals and franchise memory. For Carolina, the June 20 installment indicates that the site intends to make that memory central, using the “85 days remaining” milestone as the launch point for a ranking-driven approach.
