MLB.com’s latest Starting Pitcher Power Rankings put Dylan Cease at the forefront after what the outlet called a historic outing last week, with four additional starters earning new spots across the list.
has updated its Starting Pitcher Power Rankings, and the top spot has a new look. Dylan Cease is featured as the league’s No. 1 starting pitcher in the latest edition after a historic outing last week, a performance framed as the clearest separation between him and the rest of the rotation landscape.
The shift is part of a broader shakeup within the rankings. According to, four more starting pitchers have joined the list in this update, which indicates that the evaluation is not only rewarding established aces but also tracking pitchers whose season résumés have moved into a higher tier of impact.
What those rankings often reflect, beyond raw results, is how consistently a starter can control a game over multiple trips through the order. In a midseason environment where bullpens are increasingly taxed and lineups are more familiar, the value of a front-end starter tends to show up in early-inning command, sustained swing-and-miss rates, and the ability to limit damage when the opponent adjusts.
Cease’s ascent matters in a practical way for how teams manage their next stretch. When a rotation headliner is pitching at a top-of-league level, managers can better plan around leverage innings late in starts, extend bullpen freshness, and preserve options for late-inning matchups. That is especially important during periods of dense scheduling, where the margin for error shrinks.
’s rankings also function as a snapshot of the current hierarchy among starters, not a season-long award watch. A pitcher can rise quickly after a standout run, and conversely, a cold stretch can create immediate movement down the list. The presence of multiple first-time entries in the most recent update suggests that several arms around the league have reached, or are close to reaching, that same “difference-maker” threshold.
For fans, the key takeaway is the separating line between a rotation that can survive a rough inning and one that can reliably win the early chapters of games. Starting pitching that “clears the bar,” to borrow ’s phrasing, tends to shape not just outcomes but the way offenses and bullpens are used afterward.
Looking ahead, the next test for any top-ranked starter is whether the performance that drives the ranking holds up against the kind of lineups that will increasingly matter in September and October. With fresh names entering the rankings, the competitive picture among starters is clearly active, and the gap between the top tier and the rest of the rotation crop may continue to tighten week to week.
