With a 2027 recruiting decision on the horizon, Auburn and Alabama are viewed as the two programs most likely to land wide receiver Cedrick Simmons next week, setting up an “Iron Bowl” preview in the recruiting world.
Wide receiver Cedrick Simmons is set to announce his college commitment on Tuesday, and Auburn and Alabama are currently considered the two primary contenders for his pledge. The timing gives the annual Alabama-Auburn rivalry a recruiting twist, with the on-field Iron Bowl still months away but the recruiting battle for a potential future playmaker arriving early.
According to Yahoo Sports, Simmons is a top 2027 wide receiver target drawing heavy attention from both in-state powers. The report frames the moment as a near-head-to-head showdown, with the commitment coming next week after a recruiting process in which Auburn and Alabama have emerged as the programs most closely tied to his decision.
For both programs, landing a high-priority wideout in the 2027 class would fit a familiar template: competing for elite perimeter talent while reinforcing the surrounding talent pipeline that drives recruiting momentum. Even though a commitment is not a guarantee of immediate impact, it can shape recruiting planning, depth charts, and the priorities for future cycles, especially when a prospect is viewed as a foundational addition rather than a late-stage filler.
Recruiting commitments also function as a public report to other targets in the class. When a high-profile receiver becomes available, schools often try to convert momentum with complementary recruiting efforts, including additional wide receivers and quarterback recruiting connections that can make a class feel cohesive. In a rivalry market, the effect can be amplified because both Alabama and Auburn typically recruit from overlapping recruiting footprints and share similar recruiting time horizons for skill positions.
The Tuesday commitment will also clarify recruiting dynamics for both staffs. If Simmons chooses Auburn, it would add another receiver piece to a program that often emphasizes building competitive matchups through skill-position depth. If he chooses Alabama, it would extend the Crimson Tide’s long-running advantage of attracting top talent in the state and from nearby regions, while sustaining the program’s yearly ability to reload at wide receiver.
What happens next will likely matter beyond the simple headline. The commitment can influence how each school approaches the remainder of its 2027 board, including whether it pivots to other receivers to fill specific roles or stays focused on closing a broader recruiting cluster. For now, the most concrete takeaway is that the decision date is set for Tuesday and the finalists in the conversation are Auburn and Alabama, with Simmons positioned as a key name in both programs’ recruiting calculus.
