The College Football Playoff selection committee released its initial rankings for the 12-team field on Nov. 3, establishing the top four seeds and first-round bye picture while mapping out who would host in the opening round.
The College Football Playoff selection committee released its first set of 2026 rankings on Nov. 3, and Miami (FL) and Georgia topped the field, followed by Utah and Indiana. In this opening look, those four teams occupy the No. 1 through No. 4 spots.
A key feature of the 2026 CFP format is that the teams ranked Nos. 1-4 receive the top four seeds and a first-round bye, regardless of whether they end up winning their conference championships.
With Miami, Georgia, Utah and Indiana seated as the top four seeds, the remaining playoff teams would be determined through Nos. 5-12. Under the committee’s current bracket example, the teams ranked 5-12 would play in the first round, with the higher-seeded team hosting at campus sites.
The committee’s early bracket outline also identifies Boise State as the top-ranked Group of 6 team at No. 25, which would place the Broncos in the No. 12 seed slot. In that same example, Ohio State is listed as No. 12 out of the playoff field and Tennessee as No. 13.
The early committee snapshot underscores conference concentration at the top. The SEC leads all conferences with 10 teams in the CFP top 25, followed by the Big Ten with six.
