Chance Gilbert, an in-state four-star safety, commits to Auburn instead of Georgia

Auburn has landed a major in-state defensive piece in the class of 2027. Four-star safety prospect Chance Gilbert announced his commitment to the Tigers rather than Georgia, a choice that closes one of the most intriguing recruitment battles for the Bulldogs in-state this week.

Gilbert is listed by Rivals as a four-star safety and the No. 4 safety prospect nationally, and he is also rated No. 56 overall in the class. He is from East Coweta High School in Sharpsburg, Georgia, and the reporting notes he is 5-foot-11 and 170 pounds while also running track and field. For Auburn, adding a prospect with in-state ties matters on both roster projection and recruiting momentum inside the SEC footprint.

The timing of the decision is notable for Georgia as well. According to the same recruiting report, Auburn’s commitment comes after Georgia missed out on a major in-state safety earlier in the week. In other words, Georgia’s staff did not secure its planned addition at a premium position, forcing it to recalibrate how it wants to build a backend group for the next cycle.

From a team-building standpoint, the commitment affects both programs’ recruiting posture. With Gilbert in the fold, Auburn’s class is reported as ranked No. 15 nationally, with the Tigers sitting at No. 5 in the SEC. The update also characterizes Auburn’s haul as heavy on high-end talent, noting seven four-star commitments in addition to Gilbert and listing 16 total commits in the class overall.

Georgia’s recruiting status is also clearly affected, even as the Bulldogs have continued to add elsewhere. The report places Georgia’s class at No. 24 nationally and No. 7 in the SEC, and it points to several recent additions around June, including commitments from quarterback Colton Nussmeier, linebacker Joakim Gouda, and edge Olayiwola Taiwo. Still, it emphasizes that Georgia did not land a commitment in the secondary in this recruiting cycle up to this point, which makes Gilbert’s decision a harder blow for a unit that Georgia has often treated as a year-in, year-out priority.
