Los Angeles has secured its full group of eight selections from the 2026 NFL Draft, agreeing to a four-year rookie contract with wide receiver Brenen Thompson.
The Los Angeles Chargers closed out their 2026 rookie class on Thursday, signing fourth-round wide receiver Brenen Thompson to a four-year rookie contract, according to Pro Football Rumors. The move completes an eight-player haul, meaning every Chargers pick from this year’s draft class has now been inked.
Thompson comes to the NFL listed at 5-foot-9 and 164 pounds, a size that suggests his fit will likely revolve around route-running, speed, and space creation rather than contested catches at the catch point. His college career has also been marked by stops across multiple programs, reflecting both an evolving skill set and the typical path for players who build their game through different offensive systems.
Per the team’s reported signing announcement as relayed by Pro Football Rumors, Thompson’s four-year college production journey included Texas in 2022, Oklahoma in 2023-24, and Mississippi thereafter. That sequence matters for how quickly a receiver can translate to a pro offense, because Thompson will have already experienced different quarterback tendencies, coverage shells, and timing windows before arriving in training camp.
The Chargers’ decision to add Thompson as part of the fourth round also frames how they have balanced their draft board. By pairing the completion of the rookie class with a smaller, receiver-specific profile, Los Angeles is emphasizing depth and development at wideout alongside whatever broader plans they have already made for their established targets and second-year growth.
From a roster-building perspective, finishing all eight draft signings removes one variable from the early offseason workflow. Rookie contracts do not create game-day changes immediately, but they set the stage for offseason practices, playbook installation, and the long process of building chemistry, especially for a position group that relies on timing as much as talent.
There is also a practical football question behind every late June signing: what role does a rookie receiver carve out first. Thompson’s size and background point toward duties that could include slot-like alignments, quick-hitting routes, and high-tempo offensive sequences where separation and hands are more important than physicality. Still, until training camp and preseason reps clarify the pecking order, the exact depth-chart slot remains unknown.
For Chargers fans, the bigger takeaway is organizational. Completing the full draft class now gives Los Angeles a full group of first-year players to integrate in parallel, rather than spreading contract finalizations across multiple weeks. That matters for development, because the earliest instructional reps often determine how confidently rookies can run the routes and execute the assignments the offense is designed to demand.
