For Houston, the Texans’ defensive staff will also be working through its own evaluation process, so the matchup is likely to be more about execution and matchup control than headline moments. Still, for Los Angeles, the question is whether the team can reduce its uncertainty at several positions before the later preseason stages, when roles become harder to move.

Thursday’s game is therefore less a dress rehearsal for the regular season opener and more a checkpoint for the Chargers’ roster-building.
