After John Chayka’s first major roster move in Toronto, talk has intensified around the next layer of players who could be moved to accelerate a Leafs reset.
Toronto’s offseason direction shifted quickly when Maple Leafs GM John Chayka made what he described as a roster-imprint trade with the Philadelphia Flyers, sending goaltender Joseph Woll and defenseman Simon Benoit to Philadelphia in exchange for Emil Andrae, Samuel Ersson, and a 2026 third-round draft pick. The deal is significant not only because of the players involved, but because it suggests Chayka is willing to overhaul key roles rather than simply fine-tune depth.
The immediate practical outcome is clearer in Philadelphia, where the Flyers received Woll and Benoit as they seek answers for the future. For Toronto, the acquisition of a young defensive piece in Andrae and a goaltending option in Ersson points to a more deliberate rebalancing of the roster, one that could alter how the club staffs both end of the ice in 2026.
In that context, Yahoo Sports framed a logical next question for Toronto: if Chayka plans another major off-season move, which established names are most at risk of being the next “big domino.” According to the discussion, two names that fit the pattern are defenseman Morgan Rielly and forward Matthew Knies, both of whom can carry notable value due to their roles and the way teams project them for playoff-caliber minutes.
It is important to separate roster inventory from certainty. The Leafs and the NHL do not run on inevitability, and nothing in the available reporting confirms that Rielly or Knies are actually on the trade market. What the coverage does highlight is a planning reality. When a GM makes a headliner trade early in the summer, it raises expectations that the organization is trying to solve more than one problem at a time, which naturally increases speculation around other high-value, high-visibility players.
Rielly’s name surfaces because he is the type of player who can headline a transaction. Elite-skating defenders who can play in all situations are typically in demand, and even when contenders are not shopping aggressively, they still prioritize the ability to add that kind of talent. Knies, meanwhile, is a similar kind of marketable asset on the forward side, with a profile that teams often covet when they are trying to add speed and two-way structure up front.
For Toronto, the broader question is what the team wants its “next core” to look like. Chayka’s Flyers trade re-centers Toronto’s balance around new pieces at defense and in goal, and it implies that the Leafs are preparing for an extended period of roster evolution. If that is the case, the club could choose to keep its existing core intact, or it could decide that moving one or two proven players now is the cleanest way to pay for both near-term and longer-term needs.
What to watch next is not simply whether Rielly or Knies are linked to trade rumors, but whether Toronto begins indicating a timeline. If the organization continues to add players with younger profiles and more flexible team-building paths, that would support the idea that the Leafs are not just adjusting their depth, but preparing for a more significant rebuild of roles around a shifting identity. Until an official move is announced, however, any specific outcome should be treated as speculation rather than a foregone conclusion.
