Chiefs honor Baldwin coach Kayson Matthews as Week 6 Kansas high school flag football Coach of the Week

Kayson Matthews leads Baldwin High School’s girls flag football program to a standout season, earning Elite Eight results in Kansas’s state tournament while being recognized this week by the Kansas City Chiefs and the NFL.

The Kansas City Chiefs named Baldwin High School head coach Kayson Matthews as the Week 6 Kansas High School Flag Football Coach of the Week for the 2026 season, part of the Chiefs and NFL’s long-running Coach of the Week program.

Matthews’ Bulldogs entered the state postseason with a 10-2 overall record and a No. 6 state ranking, backed by a strong scoring margin of 366-77 and a defense that posted six shutouts. Baldwin’s season included an unbeaten 6-0 home record and a 30+ points per game scoring average.

In the state tournament run, Baldwin won its regional on Oct. 10 by beating Wellsville 33-6 and defeating Lawrence 13-0 to advance into the state playoff bracket.

Baldwin’s season ended in the state quarterfinals on Oct. 13 with a 20-6 loss to St. Thomas Aquinas, but the Bulldogs finished as Elite Eight representatives in Kansas girls flag football.

The Chiefs’ award also includes recognition tied to community impact. According to the team, Matthews received a $1,000 grant from the Hunt Family Foundation, a Chiefs bucket hat, a certificate of recognition and a custom game ball.

Beyond Baldwin, the Chiefs said Matthews serves as Senior Sports Director for the YMCA of Greater Kansas City and founded the KC Shockers Youth Flag Football program, with Shockers teams qualifying for NFL FLAG National Championships under his leadership.

Why It Matters

  • The recognition spotlights Kansas girls flag football programs as the sport continues to grow in high school athletics following KSHSAA sanctioning, according to the Chiefs.
  • Matthews’ Baldwin season illustrates the emphasis of the award on student-athlete development, not just wins, with the team highlighting classroom and community impact alongside on-field performance.
  • The Bulldogs’ Elite Eight finish sets a meaningful benchmark for a program described by the Chiefs as being in its inaugural season.
  • The Chiefs’ Coach of the Week program extends NFL visibility into the Kansas City-area high school pipeline through a weekly regional selection process.
