Chiefs name Platte County’s Derek Yost and Shawnee Mission East’s Mark Simoneau as High School Coaches of the Week for Week 6

Kansas City’s weekly honor recognizes one head coach from Missouri and one from Kansas, with awards tied to performance and program impact.

The Kansas City Chiefs announced their Week 6 High School Coach of the Week selections for the 2026 season on Wednesday, Oct. 14. The Missouri recipient is Platte County High School head coach Derek Yost, and the Kansas recipient is Shawnee Mission East head coach Mark Simoneau.

In Yost’s first season leading the Platte County Pirates, the program is 5-2 overall and 3-1 in district play, coming off a 24-3 league win over the Fort Osage Indians on Friday, Oct. 9. The Chiefs noted Platte County scored 24 unanswered points in the second half after a low-scoring first half and also highlighted that the Pirates have won 19 of their last 21 games dating back to 2025.

The Chiefs also recognized Simoneau as head coach of Shawnee Mission East in Kansas. The Lancers improved to 3-3 on the season after a league win over Lawrence Free State on Friday, Oct. 9, a game in which Shawnee Mission East scored six touchdowns and ran 41 times for 251 rushing yards.

As part of the recognition, both coaches received a $1,000 grant from the Hunt Family Foundation, a Chiefs bucket hat, a certificate of recognition, and a custom game ball. The announcement states both also qualify for the Eric Driskell Coach of the Year Award, selected at the end of the high school regular season by a panel from the Missouri and Kansas Boards of the Greater Kansas City Football Coaches Association.

The Chiefs said the High School Coach of the Week program is a joint initiative with the NFL and runs as a weekly spotlight through the high school football season, with coaches selected by the Chiefs in partnership with PrepsKC for Missouri and Kansas each week. Uncrustables is listed as the presenting partner.

Why It Matters

  • This award spotlights high school head coaching impact across the Chiefs’ Kansas City region, specifically Missouri and Kansas each week.
  • The recognition ties on-field game results to broader program development, which the Chiefs say is the point of the initiative.
  • Winning Coach of the Year at season’s end is presented as a follow-on path for the weekly honorees, extending the season-long narrative beyond a single week.
  • For programs like Platte County and Shawnee Mission East, the announcement puts their current success under a national NFL-affiliated banner while the regular high school season is ongoing.
