Chiefs’ Red Thursday campaign tops $1 million for Ronald McDonald House Kansas City
The Chiefs say Chiefs Kingdom raised the full $1 million donation through flag sales and the Hunt Family Foundation 50/50 Raffle as part of the 35th annual Red Friday tradition, with proceeds benefiting families at Ronald McDonald House Kansas City.
The Kansas City Chiefs announced that Chiefs Kingdom raised $1 million for Ronald McDonald House Kansas City during the team’s 35th annual Red Friday tradition, with the final donation unveiled this afternoon.
According to the Chiefs, the $1 million drive was supported by limited-edition flag sales and the Hunt Family Foundation 50/50 Raffle tied to the team’s season opener against the Denver Broncos on Monday, Sept. 14.
The team said members of its Community Caring Team, including running back Kenneth Walker, wide receiver Jalen Royals, and Vice President of Community Impact and Civic Affairs Anne Scharf, visited Ronald McDonald House Kansas City for Halloween-themed arts and crafts with youth and families staying at the facility.
The Chiefs also described a multi-day shopping and sales effort around the Kansas City region. On Thursday, Sept. 10, Chiefs Kingdom showed up at McDonald’s locations and Hy-Vee stores to buy limited-edition flags for a $5 donation, and the flags were also sold online for a $10 donation for the 10th consecutive year.
The Chiefs framed the fundraising effort as part of a longer commitment: the team said that with this year’s gift, more than $8.5 million has been raised over the past 14 years, and approximately $10 million since Red Thursday began in 1992. The team noted the tradition was moved to Thursday this year in recognition of the 25th anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001.
Why It Matters
- The Chiefs’ offseason-to-regular-season spotlight extended beyond the field, with a community campaign centered on families impacted by childhood illness.
- The fundraising is tied to a long-running Chiefs tradition that the team says has grown into multi-year, high-total community support.
- By centering Ronald McDonald House Kansas City, the program links Chiefs fan engagement to local medical-care support during extended hospital stays.
- The timing shift to Sept. 10 reflects the team’s decision to observe the 25th anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001 while maintaining the fundraising framework.
