The Astros first baseman adds a new league milestone after leading AL first basemen with a high fielding mark and a low error total.
Christian Walker’s defense at first base in 2026 has earned him his fourth career Rawlings Gold Glove Award, and his first as an American League winner. The honor caps another year as the Astros’ most consistent presence on the infield corner.
Walker becomes the third Houston player to win a Gold Glove at first base, joining Yuli Gurriel (2021) and Jeff Bagwell (1994). The other AL finalists at first included Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (Blue Jays) and Vinnie Pasquantino (Royals).
In 2026, Walker led American League first basemen in fielding percentage (.997), committing only three errors. He also had a notable errorless stretch, not making his first error of the season until the ninth inning of an Aug. 21 game against the Athletics.
Advanced defensive measures also supported the award case. According to FanGraphs, Walker ranked second among AL first basemen in outs above average (+3) and was third in defensive runs saved (three).
Walker logged extensive time at the position, appearing in 154 games at first base (starting 150) and playing 1,299 2/3 innings there in 2026. That workload accounted for 90 percent of Houston’s first-base defensive innings, with no Astros player recording more defensive innings at the position during the season.
The Gold Glove adds to a recent run as well. Walker previously won three consecutive Gold Gloves while with the Diamondbacks from 2022 through 2024, before signing with Houston on a three-year, $60 million deal. He is set to play the final year of that Houston contract in 2027.
