The veteran guard, acquired midseason as part of the Trae Young trade package, is expected to return for the 2026-27 season after a strong stretch as a starter and key playoff option.
CJ McCollum has reportedly agreed to return to the Atlanta Hawks for the 2026-27 season on a one-year contract worth $21 million, according to reporting that was first attributed to ESPN’s Shams Charania and then confirmed by others. The agreement keeps the Hawks’ backcourt rotation intact after an offseason in which they had to decide how to build around their current core heading into the next playoff push.
McCollum arrived in Atlanta midseason from Washington as part of the Trae Young trade, and his impact was immediate enough to change the feel of the lineup. Yahoo Sports’ account notes that the Hawks went 19-4 in games with McCollum in the starting lineup after the trade, a stretch that provided Atlanta a more established scoring identity alongside its existing creators. That type of run matters in the NBA because it affects both playoff positioning and how a team practices and organizes its late-game decision-making.
Statistically, the reported production is specific: McCollum averaged 18.7 points and 4.1 assists per game during his time with Atlanta after the move. The same reporting describes him as a stabilizing shooting presence who stretched defenses, added floor spacing, and offered some shot creation when the offense needed a jolt rather than a fully set play.
The story also points to McCollum’s ability to step up in postseason moments. Yahoo Sports highlights his playoff run against the Knicks as an example of why Atlanta valued the veteran’s offensive versatility in late-series situations, framing it as part of the reason the Hawks are expected to bring him back rather than treat his arrival as a one-and-done experiment.
Financially, the reported contract includes a 7.5% trade kicker, per the Yahoo Sports item. A trade kicker matters because it can influence the economics of any future midseason move, potentially affecting what Atlanta would cost itself or what it would need to weigh if it considered reshaping the roster again once the regular season is underway.
For Atlanta, the expected return of McCollum is a form of roster continuity at a time when contenders often prioritize repeatable half-court scoring. It also offers the Hawks a veteran with demonstrable experience operating as a secondary engine, which can reduce the burden on primary ballhandlers during stretches when defenses dig in or when shot quality changes late in games.
Still, it is important to treat this as a reported agreement rather than a finalized, official league filing in the public domain. Until Atlanta and the NBA transaction system reflect the deal, details such as the final cap treatment and any additional structure should be considered subject to confirmation.
What to watch next is how the Hawks integrate McCollum with their existing rotation at guard and wing, and whether the team uses him as a long-term fit or as a bridge while pursuing another upgrade. Given the reported starter success after his arrival, Atlanta’s early-season lineup choices could reveal whether this offseason commitment is meant to sustain that same offensive identity from the jump.
