The UFC competitor Cody Brundage says he is taking time away from mixed martial arts to become a firefighter, framing the move as a need for steadier long-term footing when a fighting career ends.
Cody Brundage, a UFC fighter known for his work inside the cage, says he is taking time off from the promotion to pursue a career path outside of fighting. In an interview published June 18 by Yahoo Sports, Brundage described the decision as less about walking away from MMA and more about building stability for life after his fighting days.
Brundage’s comments center on a basic reality of combat sports: careers are finite, and the transition out of competition can arrive quickly. While he made clear he loves fighting, he argued that the effort to compete must eventually be weighed against practical needs, including dependable work and a more predictable routine outside fight weeks.
The firefighter pursuit matters for a different reason than most sport headlines. A move like this is not tied to a bout or a ranking calculation, it is tied to identity and planning, which is why Brundage framed it as “not really a career.” That wording underscores a point many UFC athletes confront but only some publicly articulate with clarity, that even when a fighter is passionate, the job can still function as a temporary chapter rather than a lifelong plan.
UFC is built on the assumption that athletes will keep earning opportunities, and Brundage’s pause places him in the middle of a sport that typically rewards consistent output. Without speculating about which specific fights he may miss or how quickly he could return, the broader implication is that his in-cage momentum may be forced to reset, especially in a division where new challengers are always waiting in the wings.
For fans, the most immediate takeaway is that Brundage’s timeline becomes a personal one rather than strictly sport-driven. If he follows through on the firefighting goal, it suggests he may prioritize training and availability around the demands of a second career, even if that means less frequent competition. The decision also highlights how athletes manage risk, not only in terms of physical wear, but in terms of long-term economic security.
The next question is how Brundage and the UFC handle his competitive status while he pursues that new path. The interview indicates intent and motivation, but it does not, on its own, resolve the operational details fans look for such as return timing. Still, his explanation offers a window into the personal calculus behind fighter longevity, where the love of the sport has to coexist with plans for after the sport.
As Brundage moves forward, his story is likely to resonate beyond one roster spot. It is a reminder that UFC athletes are not only competitors, they are workers, and the career arc can include hard pivots. Whether this turns into a brief interruption or a longer detour, the firefighting pursuit is now the central storyline for him, not his next opponent.
